Navigon adds Google Street View to iOS navigation app

Navigon has updated its iOS navigation app to version 2.1 ($30, iTunes) adding Google Street View, which will be dropped from Apples Maps app in its forthcoming iOS 6 release. To celebrate the update, the Navigon app can be had for savings as much as $20 of its normal $50 price depending on the version chosen. In-app purchases including FreshMaps USA can be had for as low as $15, a saving of $25 off the normal asking price.

NAVIGON has updated its various iOS GPS apps to v2.0. While the interface of the software has been refined, the main improvement is the switch to an entirely new map system. App and map content has been separated, the latter in a way that allows people to download only the regions needed for a given trip. Owners of the North American app might for instance download only one or two states or provinces at a time, saving space on their device.

Navigon, the newly-bought German branch of Garmin, has unveiled a satellite navigation app for Windows Phones. The app, which provides turn-by-turn navigation with text-to-speech, will run on the latest version of Windows Phone, 7.5 (Mango). The app is available now for the European market (60, Windows Marketplace) and will be available for the US on November 15 ($30, Windows Marketplace).

Garmin on Tuesday confirmed earlier rumors and bought Navigon. The takeover of the German GPS designer is meant both to boost Garmin's core in-car navigation but is also aimed at bolstering Garmin's position in smartphones. Garmin may be buying Navigon as a defense against the pressure on GPS devices from smartphones, sources divulged in a German leak on Friday. The deal would show Garmin taking advantage of Navigon's battering in the mapping business to pay something in the tens of millions of euros, considerably lower than what it would have been worth a few years ago. A deal could be completed as soon as June, the Financial Times Deutschland informants said.

Navigon has updated its navigation app for Android devices, making it now compatible with Android 3.0 tablets. The title now takes advantage of the larger screen and is one of the first to offer real turn-by-turn directions with the new OS. The MobileNavigator app (not yet in Android Market) has new features that include live weather information and a new function that can help in finding parking spaces. The 3.6 version of the app is also available in a North American version that gets map data for the US and Canada.

GPS maker Navigon is now shipping an official Car Kit for the iPhone. Included in the package is a specialized windshield mount, as well as a USB car charger and a five-foot USB adapter cable. Distinguishing Navigon's approach is the mount's design, which uses a smooth arching arm rather than one that simply juts straight out.

Portable GPS device maker Navigon has introduced six new GPS receivers in Spain. The group is divided into the 40 and 70-series, in three categories, dubbed Easy, Plus and Premium. The entry-level GPS 40 systems get a 4.3-inch touchscreen, the ability to speak out street names and a One Click menu with three saved favorites. There is also lane assistance and reality view at complex intersections.

NAVIGON has announced regional mobile navigator apps for lower prices than its primary MobileNavigator North America app. The navigation specialist has released three regional apps, US Central, US East and US West options, at substantially lower prices compared to the company's flagship MobileNavigator version. Users can expand out of their region at a discount as well, when needed. The app supports upgrading to another region from within the app, while on the go. The app actually downloads the entire US map on first purchase, then makes regions available as they are paid for, removing the need for additional downloads on expansion into a second or third region.

Shares of GPS device makers Garmin and TomTom plummeted today through a combination of their quarterly results and the launch of Google Maps Navigation. Following both low guidance for Garmin's next quarter as well as poor results from TomTom, shares for the two fell 16.4 percent and 20.8 percent respectively and remained low through the entire trading day after news of Google's free, turn-by-turn mapping service became public.

The 5100 max uses a 4.3-inch touchscreen display with a 16:9 aspect ratio that will display real-time traffic updates.
