700 workers to lose jobs, will likely not be retained after Lenovo acquisition

Motorola Mobile has announced plans to close its US manufacturing facility of the Moto X phone. The Fort Worth, TX site run by Flextronics on behalf of Motorola will shutter before the end of the year, causing the remaining 700 workers to be out of a job. The company will continue to manufacture the phones in Brazil and China, according to Motorola.

Apple and Google's Motorola Mobility have settled the long-running patent battle between the pair. All pending litigation in all countries have been included in the deal, which does not include any cross-licensing for contentious patents. However, the two giants will "work together in some areas of patent reform."

One patent removed from dispute

Apple has won an appeal in a patent lawsuit against Motorola Mobility, mostly overturning the International Trade Commission's dismissal ruling. The patent-infringement dispute is headed back to the ITC for another round of deliberation, though Apple declined to appeal its claims regarding on one of the three patents included in the initial suit, according to a report by patent analyst Florian Mueller.

Mitsubishi, Philips, Thompson allege Motorola willfully violating patent

Adding to Google's legal woes due to its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a coalition of companies consisting of Mitsubishi, Philips, and Thompson have filed suit in the Southern District of Florida over the MPEG-2 video codec standard. The complaint alleges that Motorola Mobility is willfully violating patents licensed through the MPEG-LA licensing group and is continuing to receive profit through the group despite no longer paying for a license since December 31, 2010.

Google believes FTC consent decree restrictions overstated

A Google-made appeal filing in the Motorola Mobile versus Apple smartphone patent trial in Judge Richard A. Posner's court has been made public. Controversially, the Google-owned Motorola claims that the still-pending FTC consent decree it agreed to does not prevent it from seeking an injunction against Apple products -- claiming that in refusing a 2.25 percent fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) license, Apple is unwilling to negotiate in good faith for use of the patent.

Sensor to detect ear proximity patent deemed obvious by board

The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has tossed Motorola Mobile's final patent claim against Apple from its 2010 complaint. Google and Motorola Mobile were attempting to obtain a sales embargo on any iPhones using the technology. The patent asserted was a "sensor-controlled user interface for portable communication device" which gives mobile devices the ability to "lock out" screen touches when the phone is up to a user's ear while taking a phone call.
