Electronics company Monster, known for its high-priced HDMI cables and car audio gear, has filed suit against now-Apple-owned Beats and its founders, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, as well as former Beats partner HTC, claiming that Beats and HTC misled the company when it bought back enough shares of itself through the HTC investment to sever its contract for headphone partnership with Monster. The lawsuit does not directly involve Apple, but does revolve around the possibility that Beats knew when it left Monster that it was going to be acquired.
At its pre-CES conference on Monday morning, AV accessory manufacturer Monster revealed a number of new products and collaborations. The focus was on diversity, as presentations from representatives at partners Adidas and Qualcomm were made, along with a few celebrity appearances in the form of Nick Cannon and Shaquille O'Neal. New offerings included iSport and Adidas Performance headphones, a Bluetooth speaker, and new cables for AV enthusiasts.
This week at the Microsoft Store, save 50 percent on the Monster Inspiration noise canceling over-ear headphones. These headphones were priced at $299, but have been cut to $149, which beats the next lowest price by $101. Free shipping is included, but sales tax applies for residents of most states. The Monster Inspiration headphones come in brushed titanium, and feature in-line controls and compatibility with Skype.
Monster has teamed with Korean artist and designer Sally Sohn for a pair of one-off Diamond Tears headphones. Hand-made, and taking more than 100-hours to craft, the ultra-exclusive pair of headphones is headed to Harrods where it will sell for the equivalent of an astonishing $30,000. However, with components made from 18K gold and 5.56 carats of black diamonds, the pricing rationale becomes clearer.
Nokia has continued its partnership with Monster to deliver the new Purity Pro lineup of Bluetooth and NFC equipped headphones. The advantage of including NFC means that users can quickly pair the device over Bluetooth with a simple one-touch connection. The choice of colors also happens to align with the yet-to-be-formally-announced Nokia Lumia 820 Windows 8 smartphone.
Monster has revealed the latest model in its ClarityHD line. Joining the Model One is the new ClarityHD Micro Bluetooth speaker. The model is aimed at the higher-end of the segment and offers full support for AAC and apt-X encoding. In addition to streaming audio, the device will also double as a speakerphone allowing users to make and receive calls using its built-in microphone.
Eurocom is now shipping its small form factor Monster notebook. Despite having an 11.6-inch screen, the Monster is aimed at mobile professionals, and to a lesser extent gamers, through the inclusion of high-end options such as an Ivy Bridge-level Intel Core i7-3920XM processor overclockable to 3.8GHz. Other customization choices include going up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM, 1TB of standard hard disk storage, 750GB of hybrid storage, or a 600GB SSD.
Recently AT&T debuted a unique new web series and interactive storytelling experiment called Daybreak. To get the word out they have teamed up with Electronista to give away a gift bundle that includes a pair of Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headphones by Monster and a Skinit Gift Card good for one free Skinit custom skin for a mobile phone or notebook.
ColorWare has begun shipping the ColorWare Collection, which are three iridescent-colored Illusion Beats Studio by Dre headphones. The customized Monster phones will only be available for a limited time, though the company isn't saying how long exactly. The chameleon-like effect will shift colors depending on the angle from which they are viewed.
HTC could get into its own proper music service and more if sources are accurate. Beats co-creator and Interscope-Geffen-A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine was said by GigaOM's contacts to be working with HTC on a streaming music service that would be built-in with each phone and tablet. Details of how it would behave weren't yet ready, but it was being crafted as an anti-Spotify service to avoid giving the incumbent too much of an "iTunes-like" edge.
