First wave of Intel ultrabooks veer above 1K
Intel is having limited success getting PC builders' early ultrabooks under the $1,000 benchmark set by the MacBook Air if industry contact updates are accurate. The processor designer is trying to bring costs down by focusing not just on fiberglass but on plastic. Even skipping the aluminum-magnesium alloys due to costs and shortages, the early ultraportables from Acer, Lenovo, and Toshiba were all said by Digitimes to be getting real-world prices over the intended target.

Chinese vendor enters tablet fray with 4 models
MiTAC, a company known for its Magellan and Mio GPS systems and for its Tyan PC motherboards has entered the tablet market. At the recent CeBIT show in Germany, MiTAC announced four Android 2.3 tablets: the Zeus, a six-inch model with dual GPS receivers, the seven-inch and ten-inch multimedia Velar tablets, and the Ulmo, a seven-inch waterproof tablet. The Zeus with its dual GPS receivers provides precise satellite positioning independent of whether it is held vertically or horizontally.

MiTAC releases images, early specs of new tablets
MiTAC has granted an early look at three upcoming Android tablets that it will officially show off at the CeBIT show in Germany in March. Among them are the seven- and 10-inch Valar models, differing only in their physical size. Both run on Android 2.3 and will output 1080p video over their HDMI ports as well as support GPS.

Magellan sells GPS arm
Personal GPS device maker Magellan Navigation announced on Monday that it will sell its consumer products division to MiTAC International, according to a report today. MiTAC is Magellan's competitor, as it makes its own GPS devices, including the Mio Knight Rider GPS. The deal is expected to close sometime in January, with more details as part of a more official, final announcement expected to be released before then, most likely at CES.
