HP's cloud media service for the TouchPad is much further away than implied, music industry tipsters claimed this weekend. Marketing material suggested the music and video services would ship with the TouchPad on its now-confirmed July 1 release, but labels said that the talks are in the "early stages." Billboard's insiders said HP hadn't even made clear its objectives and when it wanted the service to go live.
HP's intention to build a webOS cloud media locker, and possibly beat Apple and Google to the feature, was given more definitive support late Friday after a leaked presentation. A pair of slides describing the TouchPad reportedly showed both the known HP Movie Store but also an intelligent, online music syncing option. PreCentral's copy showed that it would not only allow remotely storing and streaming music, including songs users "don't yet own," but would determine owners' preferred music and prioritize it for local caching on the TouchPad itself.
(Update with confirmation) HP may be buying its way into music streaming for Palm's webOS devices with the acqusition of Melodeo, a scoop today claimed. The PC veteran has completed a deal reportedly worth as much as $35 million and would primarily get nuTsie, a mobile media streaming app. It lets Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users stream their iTunes playlists over the Internet as well as access streams from fellow users and from recommendations; the iPhone is also supported but only has recommended playlists as it already has local iTunes access.
