Google shutters Meebo Bar, team to work on Google+ features

Social toolbar to shut down on June 6th

Google is going to close the Meebo Bar tool on June 6th, almost an entire year after the Meebo social service was discontinued by the search company. The social toolbar, appearing on a number of sites and providing connectivity to Facebook, Google+ and Twitter, will cease functioning, forcing website owners to remove the feature from their pages.

Messenger, apps, services cease function in July

In a support post on social service Meebo's site, the company has revealed that most of its products and services will be discontinued on July 11, 2012. Following the company's acquisition by Google earlier this month, Meebo's services and product offerings are being absorbed into the search giant's operations or discontinued entirely. So far, the Meebo Bar user-tracking feature is the only aspect that looks to be continuing.

Acquisition rumored previously, benefit unknown

Confirming the rumors from last month, Google has indeed acquired chat and social sharing service Meebo. In a blog posting on the company site, Meebo confirmed the acquisition today. The Meebo buy likely brings additional technologies and staff under the Google umbrella, but it is uncertain how the search giant will integrate the company it is buying into its current social efforts.

Google is rumored to be considering an acquisition of chat and social sharing service Meebo. Details are scarce, but sources tell AllThingsD that the deal is in the works, and Meebo could see a significant payday. Meebo was founded in 2005 as a Web-based instant message client, duplicating the functionality of AIM, Yahoo IM, and similar offerings.

Skype to bring first ads to Windows app

Skype, the VoIP and video calling service, has announced on Monday that it will for the first bring advertising to its Windows program. The first markets to do so include the US, the UK and Germany, with early spots coming from Groupon, Nokia, Universal Pictures, and Visa. These companies will advertise daily, and users will have the option to get in touch with the ad producer through a Click & Call button.
