iPhone 5 may use aluminum shell

A report from Taiwan's Economic Daily News (data in the untranslated sheet) along with separate tips suggest Apple may be reverting back to the iPhone's original aluminum material for the iPhone 5. The company was reportedly unhappy with the scratching, white paint issues and heaviness of the glass. MacOtakara suggested that Apple would follow the antenna strategy it uses for the iPad and would put the antenna reception through the company logo.


Fast Company ranks potential replacements for Jobs

Forstall seen as trumping Cook, Ive, Schiller

Financial publication Fast Company has published a new ranking of possible replacements for Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The magazine notes that even if Jobs does return from his current medical leave, the company will eventually have to find a replacement. The top potential candidate is argued to be Apple's senior VP of iPhone software, Scott Forstall. He is "young, possesses the right kind of technical knowledge and dynamism, and has become an increasingly important figure in key Apple product decisions," according to the magazine.

Papermaster said to have lost Jobs' favor

Senior VP Mark Papermaster's abrupt departure from Apple may have stemmed from personal disagreement with CEO Steve Jobs, contacts claimed Sunday night [sub. required]. The executive reportedly lost Jobs' confidence "months ago" and hadn't been influential for awhile. He allegedly neither had the creativity nor the sheer attention to detail expected to survive in the culture of Apple's higher-ups.

iPhone 4 antenna issue may have shown early

Apple's iPhone 4 antenna issue might have been identified as far back as two years ago if a scoop is accurate. An internal bug report for the signal drop was allegedly filed in 2008, well in advance of when the phone shipped. The "informed" source of John Gruber's didn't say how the issue was treated or whether it was known it would be a long-term issue, but its existence implies advanced knowledge that an external antenna might have been an issue.

Apple's Papermaster out after just two years

(Updated with added insights) In a surprise move, Apple today confirmed that Senior VP of Device Hardware Engineering Mark Papermaster was leaving the company after less than two years. Neither the company nor Papermaster has said whether the executive is leaving voluntarily or was forced out of the position, but it has already removed his biography. Mac hardware engineering Senior VP Bob Mansfield will take over his responsibilities in the short term.
