Color e-ink technology company Liquavista purchased by Amazon

Samsung offloaded display company after not meeting expectations

Confirming earlier reports, Amazon has purchased touchscreen company Liquavista. The company, previously owned by Samsung, is one of the developers of low-power color e-paper technology. No terms of the deal are currently known. Samsung was previously said to be seeking sale of the manufacturer due to the acquisition not meeting expectations of Samsung executives.

Acquisition in 2011 failed to meet Samsung expectations

Samsung is looking to sell Liquavista to Amazon, and are currently in private discussions with the online retailer, according to a report. The electronics manufacturer is said to want the sale of the Dutch company, a maker of e-reader display technology, after the acquisition in 2011 "didn't meet its expectations."

Samsung acquires Liquavista

Samsung on Wednesday night confirmed that it had bought out Liquavista in what's likely a play for smartphones and tablets. The buyout gives it access to electrowetting, a technique that can give e-paper performance closer to that of an LCD. It can refresh 70 times faster than traditional e-paper and play color video but still has twice the light transmittance of an LCD and uses just a tenth of the power.

Liquavista shows fast, 'unbreakable' flexible displays

Liquavista makes color flexible display prototype

Liquavista has just shown off its electrowetting color display cells in prototype form. The displays are said to be capable of running color video at low power on an unbreakable screen that is lightweight, thin, flexible and rugged. The company's CTO and founder, Johan Feenstra, believed the prototype is a key step in high-volume manufacturing, as it is compatible with standard glass or any other substrates.
