Brillo is stripped-down fork of Android with networking, voice support
Google has unveiled its attempt to help development of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, by launching Project Brillo. Based on core components of Android, the IoT operating system is designed to run on low-powered devices, and includes native support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, and other Android functions in order to make communications between devices as simple as possible.

Google is planning to make its mark on the Internet of Things, by reportedly offering its own operating system. The search company is said to be working on "Brillo," software The Information reports would be capable of running on smart devices, such as refrigerators and light bulbs, with extremely low power and RAM requirements, potentially as low as 64MB or 32MB of memory in some cases.
Initial preview of Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi can use some universal apps
Microsoft has brought a preview version of Windows 10 to the Raspberry Pi 2 microcomputer, but not the typical desktop version some were expecting. The Windows 10 Internet of Things (IoT) Core preview allows users to remotely access the components of the Raspberry Pi 2, as well as Intel's Minnowboard Max, with Microsoft also working with Arduino to get the operating system communicating with its hardware.
Wall-plugged controller allows non-smart devices to be controlled through apps
Internet of Things (IoT) developer iDevices has debuted Switch, the company's first Apple HomeKit-enabled device at CES in Las Vegas. The device is a hubless home automation solution which plugs into a power outlet and gives the user control of anything plugged into it using an iOS app -- extending "smart home" capabilities to non-smart devices.

This week, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced that it adopted a new version of the Bluetooth core specification. The newest Bluetooth 4.2 update comes a year after 4.1 was adopted, which laid the groundwork for better Internet of Things (IoT) functionality, less LTE interference, improved data transfers and device reconnection. However, Bluetooth 4.2 adds more user-friendly features, such as increased speed, privacy and Internet connectivity.

Nest Labs is investing further into home automation market with an acquisition announced last week. Revolv, a company that makes a smart hub to tie together Internet of Things (IoT) devices, said that it was purchased by the Google-owned connected device company. As a result, the team is folded into Nest for future product development, and sales of the Revolv hub are ending.

The ARM mbed IoT Device Platform has been built around open standards, and will bring Internet protocols, security, and standards-based manageability into one solution aimed at inexpensive low-power connected devices.
Korean company reportedly paid out $200 million for two-year old company
SmartThings has announced on its blog today that electronics powerhouse Samsung has acquired the home automation company. CEO Alex Hawkinson stated that SmartThings would continue operate independently under Samsung's Open Innovation Center group. TechCrunch first reported on the sale in mid-July, with sources stating a deal had been sealed for around $200 million. SmartThings didn't comment on the terms of the sale in the latest announcement.

Shortly after joining up with the Thread Group to work on a wireless networking protocol for the "Internet of Things," the electronics giant is said to be in the process of purchasing SmartThings, with the deal said to be worth around $200 million.
High-speed network technology research announced by UK Prime Minister
United Kingdom will work with Germany to create the next generation of wireless communications technology, revealed UK Prime Minister David Cameron at CeBit in Germany. The two countries will collaborate together on the 5G connections, which Cameron hopes could cut the time it takes to download an 800MB file down from 4G's 40-second transfer time to just one second.
First Smart Home-enabled devices shipping from Samsung in first half of 2014
Samsung has laid out its plans for a connected home at CES, one which allows multiple appliances to communicate with each other. Samsung Smart Home is billed as a platform for managing a variety of devices, such as washing machines, refrigerators and televisions, something the company hinted at in late December when it added cross-device communication support to its smart TV SDK.

A group of companies have banded together to help foster the adoption of interconnected devices, also known as the "Internet of Things" or the "Internet of Everything." Announced by the Linux Foundation, members of the AllSeen Alliance hope to work together on building a software platform for all of the devices to connect and communicate across.
System to help towards enabling Internet of Things concept
Intel has made a new system-on-chip that puts 3G power amplifiers into radio frequency circuits. The SMARTi UE2p, an improvement on its previous attempt at the platform, is smaller and more power efficient than before, while also being less complex for developers to use. Intel hopes the new SoC would bring down the cost of 3G handsets and support machine-to-machine communication to help enable the "Internet of Things."
