Renews exclusive programming from France, UK
Hulu has previewed three new shows that it will air in the summer as part of its original programming drive. The new shows, a pair of comedy series and a docu-series, are also joined by a number of new exclusive shows that will start in January, while existing Hulu-specific programming has also seen renewals.
Streaming services added days after US console launch
Nintendo has now expanded the streaming video options for the Wii U from the initial offering of Netflix. Both Amazon Instant Video and Hulu Plus have been included in the Wii U, just days after the console's US launch. Netflix, the natural competitor for both companies, has been included on the console since November 18th.
Wii U won't get TVii-enabling patch until sometime in December
When the Nintendo Wii U arrives in North American stores on November 18, it won't have access to its promised and expected video streaming services, including Nintendo's own TVii interface that will lead to third-party services such as Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. According to Nintendo, the TVii feature will arrive over a software update sometime in December. An arrival date for the other service is less defined, with Nintendo saying only that they will arrive in the coming weeks.
Apple TV support arrives year after service's Japanese debut
Hulu is now accessible via the Apple TV in Japan, according to an official announcement. The option doesn't require a firmware upgrade; instead, as with an equivalent update to US Apple TVs, Hulu should simply appear in the set-top's menus. People can try Hulu for a month before a paid subscription is needed.
Adds major service to Apple set-top
The Apple TV has been updated in the US with access to Hulu Plus, users note. Despite popping up a new icon on the set-top's homescreen, the change doesn't require a new firmware download. Access to Hulu Plus does, however, cost $10 a month after a free week-long trial expires.
Video player gets 're-engineered'
Video service Hulu has released a major update of Hulu Plus for iOS, v2.5. Most of the focus of the update is on iPad support, since it adds compatibility with the third-generation iPad's Retina display, and also enhances the native interface. Hulu has moreover improved AirPlay mirroring and HDMI output, which should also work when an iPad is in operating in split view mode. Users must have at least an iPad 2 or an iPhone 4S.
Viewdini platform will aggregate video content from free, paid services
At The Cable Show in Boston, Verizon Wireless on Tuesday announced it will soon release a new platform called Viewdini that will allow streaming of video content to subscribers of Comcast Xfinity, Hulu Plus, mSpot, Netflix, and TV sites to their mobile devices. Also, 4G mobile plans are required, and the service will only be available to Android-powered devices first, though support for other platforms is promised, as is content from Verizon FiOS.
Xbox Live services to go free from April 19-23
In an attempt to get some more users hooked on its premium Xbox Live subscription service, Microsoft will offer it for free for five days, commencing on Thursday, April 19, and running until Monday, April 23. Partners like Hulu Plus, Netflix, and EPIX will also open their doors for free during the same time period. Depending on where users are, however, they will get various amounts of free app access during those five days.
Hulu doesn't charge for incompletely watched ads
US streaming video service Hulu has just celebrated its own achievements by announcing that its paid Hulu Plus subscription service has reached the two million subscribers milestone this past winter, which is faster than any other US service, be it online or offline. It's also shared some news that's bound to make advertisers happy. It will not charge advertisers if viewers skip their ads, only billing them based on a 100 percent completion rate.
Roku to bring 2 XD, 2 XS to Amazon.ca very soon
The retail launch of Roku hardware in Canada is nearing, GigaOM believes. This lines up with earlier rumors, and two of the Internet players are said to begin selling through Amazon's Canadian website. The devices may then reach physical store shelves later on, though which ones isn't made clear.
New Hulu Plus app arrives on 7 Android tablets
Streaming TV show and movie provider Hulu on Thursday announced it has made its Hulu Plus service on seven new Android tablets. This includes the Acer Iconia Tab line, ASUS Transformer Prime and Eee Pad Transformer, LG G-Slate, Motorola Xoom, Motorola Xyboard 10.1, and Toshiba Thrive. The app (free, Google Play) will become available for more Android tablets in the future as well, Hulu added.
Still hints but doesn't firmly commit to Apple TV
Hulu has added Hulu Plus support for several new devices. The new components include select Toshiba 2012 Blu-ray players, Sharp 2012 TVs, and Best Buy’s Dynex Blu-ray players. Hulu confirmed that it hoped offer to its premium service through Apple TVs and Boxee Box systems "someday soon."
Vizio ships M-series LED LCD Smart 3D TVs
The 3D HDTVs Vizio introduced at the CES expo in January are now shipping, the company said Wednesday. The M-series sets use passive glasses technology that's cheaper to run, but still have Vizio Internet Apps. All have edge-lit LED backlighting, and some sets include up to four pairs of the battery-free glasses, which are lightweight and more comfortable than active shutter glasses.
Hulu makes deal with The CW for this year's shows
Online TV and movie service Hulu has just secured a five-year deal with The CW for rights to stream its in-season episodes. The CW is a joint venture between CBS and Warner Bros. Under the deal, the five most recent episodes of each show will be available to Hulu Plus subscribers the next day after broadcast. Those who use the free, ad-supported Hulu service can watch the same five episodes eight days after they originally air on The CW.
Nintendo 3DS and Wii to get Hulu Plus streaming
Nintendo wrapped up the week with plans on Friday to add Hulu Plus to the 3DS and the Wii. Both will get the unlimited TV streaming access sometime before the end of the year. Access should cost the same $8 per month as it does elsewhere.
Premiere Elite set-top box offering many firsts
TiVo is now shipping its Premiere Elite set-top box, which was officially introduced at the start of September. The premium offering has four digital tuners and a built-in 2TB hard drive. Meant for home theater enthusiasts, it's also THX-certified for picture and sound output.
Streaming company still seeks buyer
Hulu has reportedly signed up more than a million customers willing to pay for the company's $8/month subscription. CEO Jason Kilar is said to have made a prediction early this year that Hulu Plus would fetch 1 million subscribers before the end of the year, however the executive has confirmed that the goal was reached before the end of the summer.
List of supported devices slowly expands
Hulu has continued to slowly expand the list of Android devices supported by the company's Hulu Plus app. The latest release adds support for a variety of smartphones, including HTC's Incredible 2, EVO 3D and Sensation; Motorola's Droid 3, Bionic and X2; and LG's Revolution and G2X. Aside from the handsets, the app can also be accessed from HTC's Flyer tablet.
NYT, WSJ still mum on subscription plans
Hulu has modified the Hulu Plus iOS app to conform with Apple's App Store subscription rules, which are now in force. The change is simple, removing a link from the login screen which directed people to the Hulu Plus website. Apple's subscription rules ban apps which link to external methods of paying for in-app content, even though external options do work.
App simplifies searching to find content
Fanhattan has used the D9 conference to launch a new iPad app (free, App Store) that provides a consolidated view of movie and TV content from multiple media sources. Using the app, a viewer can browse or search for content by title, genre, or actor regardless of where it's located. Current media sources include Netflix, Hulu Plus, iTunes and ABC Player.
Best Buy promo materials let slip launch details
Marketing materials seen at Best Buy shows that Hulu Plus on TiVo is imminent. The materials also show that TiVo Premiere owners will get 6 months free streaming through the service when it launches. The Hulu Plus service has successfully launched across a several platforms including the Xbox 360, the iPad and Android devices.
Hulu Plus for Xbox 360 hits April 29 with promo
Microsoft quickly confirmed the rumors that Hulu Plus for the Xbox 360 was going live on April 29. Gamers will have access to the subscription TV service for its usual $8 per month but will also get the first week of viewing for free in a promo. Anyone in the US will have access until May 6, even if they have a Silver Xbox Live account and without having to sign up for Hulu.
Sony releases 2011 Bravia HDTVs
Sony announced on Wednesday that it will begin shipping its 2011 range of Bravia TVs introduced at CES. Of the 37 new models, 32 are Internet-connected and 23 have 3D screens. The connected TVs offer or will soon offer access to Netflix for streaming movies and TV shows, Crackle for Hollywood movies and TV shows for free, the Yahoo Connected TV Store for apps and TV content from CBS and Showtime and more.
Jersey Shore and Tosh.0 also added to lineup
Hulu has announced that it has finally signed a deal with Viacom to bring content such as The Daily Show and The Colbert Report back onto the streaming portal. The agreement also expands Hulu Plus content to include shows such as Jersey Shore and Hot in Cleveland, which will be accessible after a delay.
Microsoft adds Kinect to Hulu, Netflix, avatars
Microsoft during its CES keynote promised a handful of features for the Xbox 360's Kinect controller. A Dashboard update will give users hands-free control of not just the existing Netflix but the long-promised Hulu Plus. Like with the Zune Video Marketplace, users can point a cursor with their hands and rely on voice commands for playback.
Viacom blocks Google TV for Comedy Central, more
Google TV was dealt another major blow on Sunday after viewers discovered that Viacom had blocked the platform on its networks. Websites for Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and other networks now show that the "content is unavailable for your device" rather than loading the Flash video. The restriction was expected earlier given Viacom's failed lawsuit against YouTube but comes relatively late.
Upgrade coincides with price drop
Video service Hulu has upgraded the Hulu Plus iOS app to v2.0. The title should now have better playback performance, as well as "enhanced" queue and subscription functions. Particular emphasis has been put on the iPad interface, which now has a split-screen player, and treats thumbnails differently.
Lands on Roku devices today
The rumored Hulu Plus discount has landed with the Hulu website showing that a monthly subscription now costs $8 down from $10. Launched initially as an ad supported service, the subscription service was intended to help bolster the ongoing viability of the site. However, the test phase, which included only iOS devices and PS3 has not had the hoped for uptake resulting in the lower price.
Hulu Plus comes to all US PS3 users
Sony made good on last week's promise to bring the Hulu Plus video streaming service to all PS3 owners in the US. Unlike the previously offered Hulu Plus service this summer, users no longer need to wait for invites or be PlayStation Plus members. The monthly subscription does cost $10 per month for regular users, but grants users access to full seasons of TV shows from ABC, NBC and Fox, as well as movies from major Hollywood studios.
CBS hopes to bring TV to paid Hulu service
CBS' CEO Les Moonves this afternoon admitted that his studio was in talks to bring TV shows to Hulu Plus. He explained that the addition of the $10 monthly option changed the dynamics as it meant CBS could get paid in more than one way "without hurting the mother ship." No timeframe was given for when CBS might arrive if a deal is struck.
Hulu can't yet show all Plus shows beyond web
Hulu today acknowledged that Hulu Plus preview users on other devices can't get access to the entire video catalog. Owners on iPads, PS3 consoles and other non-traditional Hulu viewing hardware are finding that they currently only get a subset of all the video available on the website. The issue is a sore point for early PS3 users, as they must pay for PlayStation Plus to have access before the finished Hulu Plus goes live.
Hulu Plus PS3 enters limited release
Sony gave some PS3 owners a reward this afternoon as it pushed out the preview version of Hulu Plus on the game console. PlayStation Plus subscribers can download the app and, with an invite, can watch TV shows through the $10 monthly service. The initial version will support the entire library and HD video.
Hulu could drop ads entirely for higher fees
Hulu chief Jason Kilar late Wednesday mentioned that the currently in testing Hulu Plus service could have an extra, ad-free tier. While the $10 Plus service still has the same number of ads and carries its fee solely for wider access, Kilar said he would be 'comfortable' with a more expensive tier that scrapped ads altogether. He wouldn't tell NewTeeVee how likely it was, but did say that demand could influence any decisions.

Hulu has allayed fears that it would require PlayStation Plus to use Hulu Plus on the PS3. A gamer asking the TV streaming service was told that Hulu Plus only needs the yearly Sony subscription to work during the preview phase. When the full Hulu Plus is available, customers will only pay the $10 per month attached to the service itself.

PlayStation 3 owners may be facing more than $10 per month to access Hulu's streaming video content from the console. Although both companies have only publicly acknowledged the Hulu Plus subscription requirement, the service appears to require a PlayStation Plus account as well.

Hulu today quickly followed up on the preview launch of Hulu Plus by launching its companion app for iOS devices (free, App Store). The universal app gives the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch streaming access to the paid service's TV shows and movies. It can scale up to 720p on an iPad and will stream over 3G on an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or a 3G-capable iPad.
