This is a case of the Internet solving a problem that the Internet caused. Back in the day, if you wanted to go somewhere, you consulted a travel agent, and he or she presented you with a neat little agenda, a smart little itinerary, and a not very little bill. Now that we book our own planes, trains, cars and hotels, maybe we can see why they earned their money. Or maybe we can just see how useful an app and service like TripIt is.
Report claims Amazon in talks with hotels to offer online bookings from early 2015
Amazon is said to be close to expanding its retail ambitions, into the travel market. A report claims the online retailer is preparing to open a travel department, and has apparently been working with independent hotels and resorts close to major cities in order to launch the service in the near future, possibly as soon as New Year's Day.
Hotel blocked personal hotspots to force use of own Wi-Fi service
Marriott International has agreed to settle with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over the blocking of Wi-Fi networks, by paying a $600,000 fine. The hotel chain was found to be actively blocking its customers from being able to access Wi-Fi networks from within a Nashville resort, except for the one the hotel provides.
Samsung project turns handset into concierge service
A hotel in London is using the Samsung Galaxy S III as a combined keycard and remote control system for rooms. Holidy Inn London Stafford City, next to the Olympic Park, teamed with Samsung and Enterprise Alliance Program partner Fingi Inc, to make an app for the handset that provides what has been dubbed an "end-to-end hotel hospitality solution."
