Google Maps get higher-res screens, more in 6.5

Google has just released Google Maps 6.5 for Android (free, Google Play) and detailed the changes. The voice-guided GPS navigation software sports a newly redesigned home screen for Android 4.0 and newer devices. That screen lets users quickly enter new destination information or select from recent and favorite locations by swiping to the left or right.

Samsung runs anti-iPhone ads ahead of Super Bowl

Samsung has resumed its ads jabbing iPhone 4S waiters with a new spot as part of what should ultimately lead to a Super Bowl promo. The 30-second clip shows more iPhone queues, this time at night, and touts the Galaxy S II's advantage of having Google Maps Navigation. When asked how much he paid for the app, the Android phone owner says he "just has it" for free.


TeleNav preps HTML5-based, truly free turn-by-turn GPS

TeleNav goes to web and free model

TeleNav on Wednesday gave a preview of a major rethink of its GPS business. The company has developed an HTML5-based web app that provides turn-by-turn GPS on iPhones, Windows Phone, or any device that supports the modern web standard. Many of the features of native apps will remain, including voice guidance, fully animated maps, points of interest, and automatic redirection.
