BlueStacks' App Player was posted as a beta on Tuesday with significant expansion over the earlier alpha. The Android-on-Windows emulator's compatibility is now much wider and will recognize games like Angry Birds Space that would normally talk directly to an ARM chip. OS support is wider as well, expanding from just Windows 7 to either as far back as Windows XP or as recent as the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.
Pandigital hoped to raise the bar on starter tablet e-readers with a Friday unveiling for the SuperNova. The eight-inch tablet is still rare in the class for having a capacitive touchscreen and has a 4:3, 800x600 aspect ratio that suits magazines and newspapers. To fully customize the OS, it uses the most basic version of Android 2.3 and doesn't have the official Android Market, although it does have GetJar's app store as well as preloaded access to Barnes & Noble's bookstore and Flash.
Facebook has launched a new app that brings the popular social networking tool to cell phones running Java. Every Phone incorporates several popular Facebook features including News Feed, Inbox, and Photos. The app also uploads photos and finds friends from the phoneís contact list.
Investigations found late Friday Apple that has quietly sent a cease and desist notice to GetJar over its use of the term "app store." Like other disputes, Apple argued in a June 22 letter leaked today that any commercial references to app stores in the generic sense are still a violation of its App Store trademark. The WSJ understood that Apple's attorneys had suggested much longer titles to use instead, such as "application download service" or "mobile download service."
As promised, Barnes & Noble on Friday put out a version of Nook for Android (free, Market) optimized for Android tablets. The new version takes advantage of the larger screen both for reading as well as browsing the book library and store. Unusually, the app isn't just optimized for Android 3.x slates like the Motorola Xoom but also for Android 2.x models, many of which are seven-inch designs like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
The Opera Mini browser has finally returned to smartphone app store GetJar, after several weeks of absence due to a competitive conflict. The reason for GetJar's turnaround remains unclear, although the company originally cited the embedded app store in Opera Mini as a violation of its terms of service and the primary reason for rejection.
The app store for virtually all smartphone platforms that is GetJar on Wednesday announced it has rejected the Opera Mini web browser from its offerings. Citing a competitive conflict, GetJar CMO Patrick Mork, explained that Opera Mini has an app store embedded in its browser. This was after the company posted a tweet that stated Opera Mini violated GetJar's terms and conditions.
