GE's DCJ cools by acting like miniature bellows
General Electric has unveiled an ultra-thin, high-performance cooling mechanism that could allow for even thinner next-generation electronics. The Dual Piezoelectric Cooling Jets (DCJ) technology acts as a miniature pair of bellows, pulling cool air in when they expand and expelling hot air when contracting. The technology was initially developed to cool commercial jet engines, but GE managed to miniaturize it, and the company has gotten the technology working in computers.

Would continue global R&D expansion
Apple is one of several parties in talks with Russia's Skolkovo technology park about possible research and development facilities there, according to local publication Izvestia. Other interested companies are said to include Google and Facebook; agreements are reportedly already in place for firms such as Microsoft, IBM, General Electric, and Cisco. Skolkovo's organizers are said to be aiming at making the park a Russian equivalent of Silicon Valley.

Beats Microsoft, Walmart, other major corporations
Apple has leaped ahead in rank to become the second most valuable brand in the world, an interim 2011 Brand Finance study claims. Although the worth of a brand is difficult to quantify, Brand Finance's latest metrics put Apple up 33 percent to $39.3 billion. Leading the list is Google, which rose 9 percent to just under $48.3 billion.

Places above Tesla, Einstein, Edison
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has taken third place in a list of "Engineering Heroes" picked by UK engineering undergraduates. About 900 people in all were surveyed by General Electric. Jobs' selection is somewhat unusual in that the executive is not famous for his engineering skills; he is, however, known to be deeply involved in setting the design principles of Apple products, to the extent of controlling small details. His influence can be seen in devices such as the iMac, iPod and iPhone.

Cites doubled profits, iPad 2 event
For a fourth year in a row, Fortune has once again identified Apple as its Most Admired company in the world. Apple has an overall score of 8.16. "The company's blistering pace of new product releases has continued to set the bar high for tech companies across the board," Fortune writes.

Comcast poised to control content from Hulu
Comcast and General Electric have allegedly finalized a deal that will land Comcast a 51 percent majority stake in NBC Universal, unnamed sources told CNBC. The sources claim only paperwork remains to be finished as the companies prepare to officially announce the merger. Vivendi is expected to quickly finish signing an agreement to sell its stake, which sits at 20 percent.

GE holographic storage
General Electric on Monday announced it is working on a holographic storage medium that resembles a typical optical disc and allows it to store the equivalent of 100 DVDs, the NY Times reported this weekend. Holography, used for the three-dimensional images on some older credit cards for security, can also store binary data in the form of 1s and 0s. The next step involves GE making the technology usable in hardware that can be mass-produced at affordable prices.

GE 2009 Compact Cameras
GE this morning upgraded its still-young camera line with new models in each category that particularly improve zoom factors in addition to the usual megapixel counts. The X3 revamps GE's ultrazoom model with a 12X lens, a 12-megapixel sensor and a 2.7-inch preview LCD along with optical image stabilization. The E1276 in turn brings relatively long-range performance to compact cameras with 7X stabilized zoom, the same sensor depth as the X3 and a larger 3-inch display.

GE to get into HDTV market
GE announced on Tuesday it will start selling GE-branded HDTVs as part of a joint venture with Taiwan’s Tatung Company. The newly formed venture is called General Displays & Technologies (GDT), and will produce GE-branded HDTVs with Internet connectivity via an Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) connection. Eventually, say GDT executives, the idea is to allow users to download widgets and services straight to their HDTVs.
