GE shows 500GB holographic storage prototype

General Electric on Monday announced it is working on a holographic storage medium that resembles a typical optical disc and allows it to store the equivalent of 100 DVDs, the NY Times reported this weekend. Holography, used for the three-dimensional images on some older credit cards for security, can also store binary data in the form of 1s and 0s. The next step involves GE making the technology usable in hardware that can be mass-produced at affordable prices.

GE this morning upgraded its still-young camera line with new models in each category that particularly improve zoom factors in addition to the usual megapixel counts. The X3 revamps GE's ultrazoom model with a 12X lens, a 12-megapixel sensor and a 2.7-inch preview LCD along with optical image stabilization. The E1276 in turn brings relatively long-range performance to compact cameras with 7X stabilized zoom, the same sensor depth as the X3 and a larger 3-inch display.

GE sets up venture to make Internet-ready HDTVs

GE to get into HDTV market

GE announced on Tuesday it will start selling GE-branded HDTVs as part of a joint venture with Taiwan’s Tatung Company. The newly formed venture is called General Displays & Technologies (GDT), and will produce GE-branded HDTVs with Internet connectivity via an Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) connection. Eventually, say GDT executives, the idea is to allow users to download widgets and services straight to their HDTVs.
