Researchers at Israel's Ben-Gurion University have discovered a vulnerability in the touted Samsung Knox security suite found on the flagship Galaxy S4. The flaw reportedly could allow a maliciously-crafted piece of software to track and record communications, including text messages and emails -- and an infected phone could even infect other phones within a secured network, such as those being tested by the US Department of Defense.
Samsung's two newest flagships may see an update to the latest flavor of Android, version 4.4 KitKat, as early as January of next year. French carrier SFR has announced that the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 – both released earlier this year – will see an update to Android 4.4 around the end of January or the beginning of February of 2014. The carrier, according to SamMobile, has a healthy record of tipping release dates before Samsung does, so owners of the two new flagships may just a little over one month before they can have the most recent software on their devices.
Nokia has offered a free Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia device to a man whose Samsung Galaxy S4 caught fire earlier this month. Richard Wygand's GS4 smoked and burned while it was charging, and Samsung's reaction to his posting images of the device on the Internet sparked a controversy last week, as the South Korean tech giant appeared to try to buy Wygand's silence with the promise of a new phone. Nokia contacted Wygan and offered him a Lumia by Twitter.
iPad Air activations grew some 51 percent over the previous weekend during the course of Black Friday and the rest of the Thanksgiving weekend, according to new Localytics data. The figure is based on the number of new devices that appeared in Localytics tracking for some 20,000 apps. The iPhone 5c and first-generation iPad mini also did well, each growing by 26 percent.
Samsung's follow-up to the Galaxy S4 may finally adopt a metal chassis, and the latest rumor has Samsung relying on the company responsible for the body of both the iPad mini and HTC's One to make it. PhoneArena reported Tuesday on a new rumor out of Taiwan that Samsung is looking to metal chassis producer Catcher to begin production of the Galaxy S5's body some time in December. Reportedly, the South Korean tech giant has called on the Taiwanese casing maker to produce between 10 and 30 million units for the forthcoming flagship.
Updates for Android KitKat are heading to the Google Play editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. The two devices, running on stock Android instead of the Sense or TouchWiz versions provided by HTC and Samsung respectively, will start receiving over-the-air updates from today onwards, upgrading the devices to Android version 4.4.
Samsung has confirmed earlier rumors that AT&T will be the first US carrier to offer its Galaxy S4 Zoom to customers, from November 8th. Priced at $200 on a two-year contract or $25 per month under AT&T Next, the Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 4.3-inch qHD screen with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1.5GB of RAM, LTE connectivity, and a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor on the back with optical image stabilization, a Xenon flash, and a 10x optical zoom.
Samsung has started to roll out its Android 4.3 update to the Galaxy S4. The update, which leaked earlier this week, brings a number of improvements to Android itself as well as Samsung-specific changes, and also allows the Galaxy S 4 to communicate with the Galaxy Gear smart watch over Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy.
Although the iPhone 5s and 5c are both great phones, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the latest Motorola Droid models -- the Droid Maxx, Droid Ultra, and Droid mini -- are currently better choices, says Consumer Reports. The Droids in particular are said to have superior battery life, and larger displays. CR also points to some software advantages, such as Google Now and Motorola's Active Notifications.
Stocks of the iPhone 5s at US Apple Stores have declined substantially in the past two weeks, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The data was compiled using Apple's Personal Pickup availability tracker. "Supply of the iPhone 5S has declined in the US from 27% of total SKU's available two weeks ago to 6% over the past week, based on our checks of 60 Apple stores. Separately, the percent of stores that had at least one SKU declined from 90% two weeks ago to 40% over the past week," Munster writes.
