Samsung has decided against bringing the latest iteration of Android, version 4.4, to international models of the Galaxy S III and the S3 Mini. Despite previous plans to bring Android KitKat to the device, as well as allowing for Sprint to release its variant of the software, Samsung advises the two devices will not be updated outside of the United States.
Samsung may be updating its older flagship smartphones to Android KitKat in the future, according to a rumor. Despite the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note 2 being in the middle of updating to Android 4.3 through some carriers, it is claimed that the smartphone manufacturer will boost both devices to Android 4.4.2 by the end of March.

TiVo has put its new Slide Pro Remote on sale. Much like the original, the Slide Pro Remote resembles a normal TiVo remote, but conceals a backlit QWERTY keyboard in a second layer. This new version, which includes RF support, dedicated "Search" and "Back" buttons, and can play a tune when lost, will work with all TiVo Roamio DVRs, TiVo Premiere DVRs, and TiVo Minis with a dongle, and is priced at $50.
Android version 4.3 will be reaching the Samsung Galaxy S 4 in October, according to a European carrier's update roadmap. SFR of France has revealed that, just as reported earlier, the Galaxy S 4 will be the first of three Samsung devices to get the update to 4.3 Jelly Bean, with the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II both getting it at a later time.
Samsung will be bringing Android 4.3 to two more Galaxy devices later this year, after revealing its new Galaxy Note 3 will ship with the latest version of Jelly Bean. Both the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy S 4 will receive the mobile operating system update, which will be issued to carriers sometime in October, and will reach customer devices shortly afterward.
Analysts at investment firm Piper Jaffray, after monitoring online auctions for Apple and Samsung smartphones, have found that the three-year-old iPhone 4 has actually gained in resale value by just over 10 percent, while the later iPhone 4S and 5 models dropped in resale value -- but nowhere near as much as Samsung's former flagships the Galaxy S III or Galaxy Note II. A similar study conducted in China looking at resale auctions there saw similar results, with the iPhone 4 gaining resale value while newer iPhones and Galaxy products dropped.
A new study focusing only on smartphones by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) has ranked two premier Samsung smartphones -- the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note 2 -- ahead of Apple's iPhone various iPhone models in a new survey of 2,500 buyers. The results have a number of odd notes to them, giving high scores to mostly older models and entirely omitting recent entries such as the HTC One, BlackBerry Z10 and Samsung Galaxy S4; ranking all three iPhone models as essentially equal when the iPhone 4 is now three years old; and using the exact same vaguely-defined methodology as a recent Korean study, suggesting a possible agenda (though the Korean study actually gave the crown to the iPhone).
Samsung has made comment on the case of an exploding battery in a Galaxy S III, determining that the battery was an unauthorized component. The GS3 in question belonged to a woman in Switzerland, and the South Korean giant acquired the damaged device to inspect it. Samsung released a statement to Le Matin saying that the battery that was in the phone at the time of the explosion "was not supplied or manufactured by Samsung or a company authorized by Samsung."
The Android 4.2.2 test firmware for Samsung's Galaxy S III has leaked to the Internet, signaling that a final update for the Samsung handset may not be to far off in the future. Devoted Samsung site SamMobile acquired the leaked firmware, and the site notes that it is definitely in an unfinished state. The update is still under testing, and it may see release from Samsung in July or August of this year.
