CUPP Computing has shown off a new version of its PunkThis board that could lead to tablets with both Android and Windows without compromising both. Taking residence inside an ASUS Eee Slate, the board tested by Engadget would replace the 2.5-inch SATA drive with a full Android device with a 1GHz TI OMAP3730 processor, 512MB of RAM, its own Wi-Fi, and Android 2.3.4. A mini PCIe slot would provide room for a solid-state drive to give storage to the Windows side.
ASUS has just introduced its business-oriented Eee Slate B121 PC. The 12.1-inch, 1280x800 tablet is similar to the original Eee Slate but tuned to workers, with security coming from a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and Computrace LoJack for remote location and data wipes. It likewise ships with Windows 7 Professional, although it still has the Gorilla Glass display and a 1.33GHz low-voltage Core i5.
ASUS has revealed prices and ship dates for its 10.1-inch Eee Pad Transformer netbook/tablet and the 12.1-inch Eee Slate EP121 for the UK. The Transformer is now available for pre-order and ships on April 6. It will cost £379 ($607) for the 16GB version and £429 ($688) for the 32GB version, with both prices including local taxes.
Microsoft and ASUS on Friday ramped up a video ad campaign (below) to steer possible iPad 2 converts towards the Eee Slate. The four spots all focus on one person's use case, such an artist, a blogger, a business owner, or a mother, to show how the Windows 7 tablet helped them out. Each of them is consciously aimed at those who might consider Apple and show either an area Microsoft believed it had an edge, like Office support, or directly attack a perceived iPad flaw.
ASUS has a "secret weapon" to wield against the next iPad, chairman Jonney Shih hinted in an interview. The four new tablets at CES were just the start and would be accompanied by something else. He wouldn't tell Computerworld if it was a tablet at all and was adamant that it had to wait until the launch.
The Eee Slate EP121 tablet from ASUS was officially unboxed in a series of YouTube videos (below). The 12-inch tablet is meant for business users, as it comes with a 1.33GHz Core i5 CPU and Windows 7 Professional. It also ships with a separate Bluetooth keyboard to ease content creation.
ASUS' Eee Pads and Eee Slates using Android have not only been delayed but might ship without Android 3.0, company marketing specialist John Swatton said Wednesday. The announcements, which mentioned a spring shipping window and the new OS across the board, were a "mistake," he told the Inquirer. They would instead ship in summer and would be limited to Android 2.3, Google's most recent phone OS.
Presenting at CES 2011, ASUS has announced four new Eee tablets. The first of these is the Eee Pad MeMO, a 7.1-inch tablet running Android 3.0. The device includes a stylus despite using an iPhone-like capacitive touchscreen, and can output video in 1080p by way of a micro HDMI port.
