Release mandatory in open source licensing
Apple has published the open-source code contained in OS X Yosemite. This includes the xnu-2782.1.97 kernel, as well as numerous other system components. The parts combine into Darwin 10.10.0, an open-source OS derived from Apple, NeXTSTEP, and BSD code, among other sources.
Apple intern details Apple's experiments with ARM
A paper written by a former Apple intern, and now Core OS engineer, has detailed Apple’s attempts at getting a full version of Mac OS X to boot on an ARM processor, reports iMore. Initially subject to an embargo, but just recently published, the paper was written as part of a Bachelor degree thesis in 2010 by Tristan Schapp. It details the technical aspects and challenges associated with getting Darwin, which underpins OS X, to work effectively on the ARM architecture.
ALAC now open to modify and use
Apple in a gesture to the community started up the Apple Lossless Audio Codec project to open-source its lone proprietary audio standard. Its change lets developers implement and modify the format for both encoding and playback. Codes also get an example app that can read or write audio to Core Audio and WAV, along with a "magic cookie" to use when making M4A and MP4 clips.
