CEO asked about digital divide, Silicon Valley diversity
Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared in a pre-recorded segment on Good Morning America today, highlighting Apple's participation in the US ConnectED program, rather than launching a new program as many media outlets reported. The Cupertino executive spoke about the digital divide, and answered questions about diversity in the technology sector with host Robin Roberts.
Says 114 schools getting iPads, MacBooks, Apple TVs
Apple has launched a minisite promoting the company's involvement in the US federal government's ConnectED initiative. The program is concerned with getting better Internet access and computing equipment to underfunded schools, and Apple has pledged some $100 million. Newly revealed in the minisite is that Apple's grants have reached 114 schools in 29 states, and that 92 percent of the students at those schools "are of Hispanic, Black, Native American, Alaskan Native, or Asian heritage."
Best Buy to shut down Connect business on June 1
Best Buy Connect, the branded mobile 3G and 4G data service that went live in June of 2010 is now being discontinued, Engadget learned. A leaked memo indicates that new activations will no longer be accepted, effective immediately. Current customers will see their service end on June 1.
