Pooled license simplifies technology dispersal
MPEG LA, which holds patent rights for several technologies including components of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, ATSC, and AVC, is now offering a consolidated license for patents pertaining to MVC (Multiview Video Coding). MVC is the standard for encoding and decoding video that is used in 3D-capable hardware, such as Blu-ray disc players and burners, video cameras, and PCs.

HP updates drivers to make printers more secure
HP has posted a new driver update for its web-connected and networked LaserJet printers in an attempt to plug a malware explot. The was brought on after findings from Columbia University were revealed late in November. While no customers have reported attacks, HP claimed, the firmware upgrade would prevent them from happening in the first place.

University finds HP network printer security flaw
Researchers at Columbia University have allegedly found a hack in HP LaserJet printers that can affect network security and destroy the affected printers, MSNBC said. Printers other than HP's could be affected and there is no simple workaround for the issue. The researchers found the flaw after months of work in a lab, briefed federal agencies two weeks ago, and informed HP about it last week.
