June 11 - 4:40pm EDT   In addition to the headline-grabbing unveiling of the Windows 7-based Archos 9 tablet, Archos has also released the Archos 13 notebook, Archos 10s netbook and the Archos Digital Satchel educational PC for children on Thursday. The Archos 13 is the French company's first notebook PC, sporting a 13.3-inch, 1280x800 screen. Specs include a 10-cell battery, 120GB hard drive and 1.2GHz Intel Celeron Ultra Low Voltage CPU. January 12 - 4:20pm EST   CTL has recently announced its 2goPC convertible educational notebook, modeled after the second-generation Classmate PC Intel officially introduced on Friday at the CES in Las Vegas. As one of Intel's partners in its Intel Learning Series initiative to create software and hardware products to enhance children's learning experiences, CTL is one of the first manufacturers to launch the PC, offering a first look at the detailed specs. January 9 - 6:10pm EST   At the CES show on Friday, Intel officially released its second-generation Classmate PC, which is the first low-cost educational notebook to use a convertibe tablet design with a touchscreen. The 8.9-inch notebook will use a 1.6GHz Atom processor and be manufactured by local computer makers in the various countries it will be sold in. At the same time, the company announced the Intel Learning Series initiative that combines hardware, software and services designed for education, supporting companies that build products to enhance children’s learning experiences. August 21 - 3:55pm EDT   At the Intel Developer Forum late on Wednesday, Intel showed off its newest Classmate PC, which is due to complement and not necessarily replace the company's current educational notebook. Unlike the current offering, the new Atom-powered notebook will feature a touch-screen that allows it to be used as a tablet. The PC will compete with the upcoming dual touch screen educational notebook from OLPC, though it will beat it to market by at least one year. [full story]

June 19 - 5:00pm EDT   Intel has been named today as one of the parties developing its own version of the Sugar user interface for its Classmate PC with children as the targeted user. The UI would be based on the version used in One Laptop Per Child's XO educational laptop. OLPC's former executive and current Sugar Labs Foundation head Walter Bender announced about one month ago that his company is talking with four PC makers to supply them with the Sugar user interface. April 9 - 4:30pm EDT   Microsoft may have no choice but to break up Windows into many different versions if it wants to avoid serious long-term problems with its code, according to analysis by Gartner analysts. Neil MacDonald and Michael Silver of the research group note that the operating system is being asked to cover too many aspects of computing, creating a "monolithic" code base that is both too demanding on some classes of hardware and consumes too much space. The company's decision to extend Windows XP for budget systems is a sign that Vista has stretched too far, Gartner's experts note. [full story]

April 3 - 4:35pm EDT   One version of Windows XP will continue to be available years after other editions have ceased to exist, Microsoft has announced. XP Home, the most basic version of the operating system, will still be available for OEMs through at least June 2010, in order to support low-cost computers such as Intel's Classmate PC, and ASUS' popular Eee PC. This is because the systems have less RAM, smaller hard drives and inferior processors, making it difficult to run any version of Windows Vista. [full story]

March 20 - 8:50am EDT   Intel will sell its Classmate PC notebook in its home territory of the US as well as in Europe, the company said Thursday. While the PC was designed for developing-world countries where cost and a toughened design are necessary, a refreshed version of the Classmate will be available in the more developed areas within weeks from today. Other companies are expected to follow with designs of their own, though whether this includes known "netbook" designs such as the ECS G10IL or the Eee PC 900 is unknown. [full story]
