Kindle Fire, Android tablets gain share at iPad's expense

Chitika sees iPad share dropping 7.14 percent over holidays

Apple's iPad and iPad mini may have been a top-selling item over the holiday period, but entries from competitors sold strongly enough to slightly loosen Cupertino's stranglehold on the tablet sector. This according to new figures out from Chitika Insights, which looked at hundreds of millions of smartphone and tablet ad impressions from December 1 to December 27, 2012 in Canada and the United States. Chitika found that tablets from Amazon, Samsung, Google, and Microsoft gained a combined total of 5.5 percent market share over that period, while Apple's iPad lost 7.14 percent share.

Report: iOS 6 sees 15 percent adoption in 24 hours

According to advertising and analysis firm Chitika, Apple's recently-released iOS 6 has already been installed on 15 percent of all eligible iOS devices, after just 24 hours availabilty. The data was obtained by querying the browser and OS version on "millions" of advertising impressions generated by the Chikita Ad network from September 19 to 20.

Apple tablet still dominates web usage

Advertising network purveyor Chitkia has mined advertising impression data and discovered Apple's iPad to have the highest portion of web-use share over any other tablet by a long shot. Over 94 percent of the metered Internet traffic from all tablets comes from the iPad. The next closest competitor is the Samsung Galaxy, achieving a mere 1.22 percent.

Chitika claims iOS now used online more than Mac

New Chitika traffic data has seen Apple possibly cross a milestone for web use online. As of February, 8.15 percent of all web traffic being monitored was coming from an iOS device, passing the Mac for the first time with OS X share at 7.96 percent. The two platforms had been converging since October, with the Mac losing share mostly as Apple's other OS gained prominence.

Mac OS X Lion growth slows, hits 16% of Mac share

Chitika has Lion adoption levelling off

Adoption of Mac OS X Lion has slowed significantly in the past month, Chitika found in its latest web traffic results. While it was up to 14 percent in September after being available for two months, it had moved just two percent more by late October to hit 16 percent of the Mac user base. Snow Leopard still had a clear majority at 55 percent, while even the four years old Leopard was at 22 percent.

Chitika September data sees Mac dent Windows

Sustained demand for Mac OS X Lion has helped the Mac pass 10 percent for real usage share, Chitika has found. The Mac grew by just over a point to hit 10.6 percent in current September figures. Windows was the primary victim, dropping 0.6 percent but now sitting at 77.7 percent.

Numbers from ad network show quick jump from AT&T

Verizon may have already taken more than 12 percent of iPhone users in the US market, according to numbers gathered by mobile ad network Chitika. The company's data is based on a 24-hour rolling period, which logs iPhone web usage and ties each device to a specific carrier. If the numbers are accurate, it suggests AT&T's share of iPhone users may have already dropped to approximately 87 percent.

Microsoft founder ambivalent on Apple tablet

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in a new interview offered up mixed praise for the iPad. When asked his opinion, he said that "it's okay" and characterized it more as an attractive design than a truly useful product. He wasn't certain how it could be used compared to other computing devices.
