News from the video game industry for the week of December 21
Every Sunday, Electronista and MacNN offer up a single article with some of the significant happenings in the video game industry for the previous week. In this edition of the Weekly Game Replay, we take a look at Nintendo winning two patent disputes, the catch with the free game offer for Assassin's Creed Unity issues, new details on Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, Resident Evil HD cross-buy, and expansion of PlayStation Now to non-Sony devices.
Technology based on open standard coming to in 4K monitors up to 31.5 inches
During the Future of Compute event in Singapore, AMD announced that it's working with Samsung to put the first monitors on the market that support its FreeSync technology in ultra high-definition (UHD) 4K monitors. To go along with the gaming-focused monitor technology, it was also announced that AMD is working with well-known game developer Capcom to implement Mantle support in the future.
Remake based on 2002 version of game, said to retain the same atmosphere
Capcom announced this week that it's giving one of the first hit PlayStation games a high-definition makeover for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. Horror fans will be happy to know that Resident Evil is getting the treatment, based on the remade version that was brought to the GameCube in 2002.
Game company defense in place since 2008, majority number of bids not met
Video game developer Capcom may be left vulnerable to a stock buyout after shareholders failed to meet a majority number of votes to renew a takeover defense this week. Capcom first issued the takeover defense in 2008 to combat large-scale share purchases to gain a voice within the company. It was indicated that the company was looking to issue a renewal when it posted the 25-page plan in May.

[Updated: Marvel vs Capcom 2 is available as expected on the US Apple Appstore] Previously reported to be available the week of April 30th, Capcom's Marvel Vs Capcom 2 iOS port is now available in the iTunes App Store. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is a 2D animated sprite fighter originally released 2000 in the arcade, and at home on the Dreamcast, Playstation 2, and the Xbox.
Nintendo 3DS gets right analog add-on in US
Nintendo on Tuesday confirmed that its Circle Pad Pro add-on for the 3DS would becoming to the US. The right analog stick and shoulder button hybrid should reach the US on February 7 as a GameStop exclusive. It will carry a relatively low price at $20, although it won't come with extras.
Sony to intro PSP Remaster games for PS3
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) on Sunday revealed it will launch a new PSP Remaster series of games for the PS3. They will first hit the Japanese market on Blu-ray discs and will be redone versions of current games for the handheld. In the changeover, they will get HD graphics and new features, including support for Sixaxis and DualShock controllers.
EA My Garden shwos Nintendo 3DS much faster
EA today showed off a first game for the Nintendo 3DS that backs beliefs that the handheld is using a much faster platform than initially suspected. The garden creation game My Garden has both much more geometry than a typical DS/DSi game but has high dynamic range effects for bloom and depth of field to create a soft background. Many of the in-game objects also have their own individual shadows.
Resident Evil 5 X360 Leak
A new tip sent to Ars Technica hints that Microsoft may be planning a special-run Xbox 360 to mark the launch of Resident Evil 5. The bundle would purportedly include a red Xbox 360 with a matching controller as well as a copy of the survival horror game, a special Xbox Dashboard theme, and a coupon to download Capcom's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD. Whether the system would be a standard Xbox 360 Pro or else an Arcade or Elite model isn't known, nor is pricing or a release date.
