Aereo can't operate as cable company, appeals court denies request

Aereo, the broadcasting startup that allowed users to rebroadcast and time-shift over-the-air (OTA) programming, appears to be running out of ways to stay alive. According to documents acquired by the Washington Post, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has denied the company's recent request to reconsider the case.


South Korean broadcasters launch Ultra HD television channels

Initial broadcasts pave the way to commercialization in 2014

Broadcasters in South Korea are attempting to provide owners of Ultra HD televisions with suitable content for the high-resolution televisions. Five members of the Korean Cable Television and Telecommunications Association have started broadcasting a small group of channels with the 4K content, six months ahead of its original plan, and a year earlier than similar proposals in Japan.


UStream consolidates iOS apps, adds social aspect

One app now allows watching or broadcasting

UStream, the web service that broadcasts web shows and allows users to create their own live streams, has combined their previous two iOS apps -- one for watching, one for broadcasting -- into a single free app now simply called UStream v2. Users can now "go live" on microphone or camera-enabled iOS devices, or simply watch, follow and interact with their favorite broadcasters almost anywhere. The app also now features sharing a link to one's own stream or other UStream content with friends on Twitter and Facebook.

UStream adds iPod touch (4th gen), works over 3G

UStreamTV has added support for the fourth-generation iPod Touch and a new full-screen broadcasting display to their free UStream Broadcaster app v2, allowing users iPhone and Touch users capable of running iOS 4.0 or higher to use the built-in cameras to create their own video stream over 3G or wi-fi.


Livepack offers wireless live-streaming of HD video

Livepack wireless broadcasting system

Livestream has launched a new broadcasting system that enables wireless live-streaming of HD video, Livepack. The device is designed for situations where users donít have a reliable fixed internet connection, but want to broadcast events such as weddings, ceremonies or send transmissions from a moving car. The device features six built-in 3G modems to help deliver a strong internet connection, and records all data to the Livestream server. Livepack comes complete with everything needed for live video streaming including encoding hardware, FireWire cable and 30-hours of streaming uplink per month.
