13.4 billion app downloads in Q1 2013, Apple tops profit

Apple remains the number one platform for app developer profit

A new report by Canalys estimates that the top four app stores served up a total of 13.4 billion apps for the first quarter in 2013. App downloads across Apple’s App Store, Google Play, Windows Phone Store and BlackBerry World grew 11 percent over the previous quarter. Revenue for developers also grew by 9 percent with app revenue reaching $2.2 billion in gross returns.

Store goes live ahead of BlackBerry 10 launch events

Research in Motion has put its new BlackBerry World storefront online. The phone manufacturer's online store now stocks a number of apps, music, and videos for purchase and download, ahead of the company's global launch events for its BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system and, most likely, new BlackBerry smartphones.

Rebranding of app store mirrors that of Google Play

Research In Motion is rebranding the BlackBerry App World into BlackBerry World, turning the store into a "one-stop shop" for various kinds of content. In a similar move to Google in rebranding the Android Market as Google Play, the name change will see the service offering media as well as applications, expanding its focus to include video and music.

BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha handset sport 4.2-inch, 1280x768 touchscreen

A second, more official image of the recently leaked BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha unit surfaced on Tuesday. The image is accompanied by some specs, with the smartphone sporting a 4.2-inch touchscreen with 1280x768 resolution. The handsets are expected to be distributed to developers for the BlackBerry 10 platform at the BlackBerry World conference that started in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday.
