Every so often, MacNN finds a deal that is too big or important to go into our usual deal lists, and is deserving enough to be highlighted in its own Big Deals post. Also, talk to your folks, it's important
What Christmas, Black Friday or Thanksgiving presents do you get for your family? We don't care. Partly because William Gallagher and Malcolm Owen are in the UK where for some bizarre reason Thanksgiving isn't a big deal. Also, speaking of big deals, Black Friday has come to Britain but this year one big retailer has said they're not doing it. So it's just Christmas left and frankly we can shop for the family later.
Apple Maps, App Stores, iTunes affected by brief outage
Apple's online services endured another outage overnight, with a number of services becoming unusable for over an hour. Apple's system status page advises some users were affected by downtime for "multiple store services" and "multiple iCloud services" at around 10pm EST for just over an hour, with all users affected by a slightly briefer Maps issue for approximately half an hour at roughly the same time.
Class-action suit by banks will be bellwether for future hack responsibility suits
The judge overseeing the suit filed by banks against Target regarding the "Black Friday" data breach from 2013 has allowed the suit to continue, despite protestations by the retailer. Judge Paul A. Magnuson of the Minnesota district court has ruled that Target failed to respond to warnings that an attack was imminent, and the failure to observe these warnings meant that the company played a "key role" in allowing the data theft.
lowest prices on Apple desktops
This year, like every year, Apple is running a Black Friday promotion; however this year, if you are looking to save the most cash on a new Mac, the best bet is to look elsewhere. BestBuy.com has reduced prices on a wide selection of Macs. The 21.5-inch iMac with a 1.4GHz Intel i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive has seen a $200 discount to $899, which is around $80 less than the lowest price found anywhere else.
Android tablet deals from zero dollars
With all the great deals out there on Android tablets today, it gets a little bit tricky trying to figure out what exactly the best prices are. While most of these tablets are even remotely in the league of top-quality tabs like the iPad or the Nexus 7, we have put together a list of some of the best Black Friday Android tablet deals we could find. At TigerDirect.com right now, get the Proscan seven-inch Android tablet with McAfee 2015 multi-access for only $70. That's already $80 off the list price of $150. A $70 mail-in-rebate offer on this bundle drops the final cost down to zero dollars. However, McAfee activation is required to claim this rebate.

Apple's Black Friday 2014 event
It is now officially Black Friday, and we wanted to get things started off on the right foot -- so we have rounded up a selection of items from Apple's Black Friday sale. This year, Apple has combined their Black Friday promotion with the World AIDS day promo announced earlier this week. With qualified purchases, customers will receive Product (RED) gift cards on everything from iPhones and iPads to iPods and Beats by Dr. Dre headphones.
best SSDs at the lowest prices
This year for Black Friday, there will surely be heaps of discounts on solid state storage devices, with many of those deals showing up online already. Right now, Newegg has the Corsair 240GB Force LS Series internal solid state drive on sale for $115. That's already a discount of 50 percent off the list price, but a $30 rebate card drops the price further to $85. Just that alone makes this the best price out there by nearly $50. Use coupon code 'NAFVC10' and checkout with Visa Checkout to bag an additional $10 in savings.
Amazon Kindle tablets and e-readers from $49
Black Friday deals are on now at Amazon. No need to wait outside in the cold, or battle the hoards of deal-hungry shoppers to get these great prices. To kick things off today, the online store is offering discounts on their line of Kindle tablets and e-readers. The all-new Kindle with touch has been reduced again by $30, and can be had for only $49 with special offers that display on the lock screen, or $69 without the ads.
Reduced coverage on US holiday gives us chance to be thankful for our readers
Happy Thanksgiving to all of our US readers from all of us here at MacNN and Electronista! Today and tomorrow are traditionally very slow news days, so there will be reduced coverage through the holiday (except for our Black Friday and other deal-related posts, along with a hearty serving of giveaway goodness, never fear!) so that we can spend time with our families. We want to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to all of our readers, both long-time and new, for your readership, your comments and suggestions, and your news tips and corrections. We must also thank our sponsors, advertisers and the many developers and companies that help us keep our readers informed on all the latest and greatest in the tech world. We are grateful for your support.
Retailer points to third party payment processors as guilty party
Five banks are suing retailer Target over the infamous "Black Friday" data breach in a federal lawsuit. In a hearing yesterday before US District Judge Paul Magnuson, Target claimed that the bank's losses weren't the retailer's fault, as they happened at the point of sale in many stores that the corporation claims it is not responsible for, as opposed to a central failure in corporate data services - therefore, the Minnesota and US Plastic Card Security Act provisions don't apply.
MacNN and Electronista deals for November 21, 2014
Black Friday is just one week away, and veteran shoppers are probably dreading the prospect of facing off against a deal-seeking mob shouting at each other over discounted electronics in the near future. Today's Friday Deals post, just as with previous Fridays and now every Monday until the end of the year, aims to provide you, the discerning MacNN and Electronista reader, early deals from retailers from the comfort of your home, without going near the intimidating (and likely plague-ridden) mass of shoppers. As usual, all prices are correct at the time of publication, but may not be valid at a later time. We're going to update this post many, many times over the next three days. Check back often!
Budget retailer to host three short-term 'events'
Walmart will be including Apple products in three different US Black Friday sales "events," the retailer has announced. The first event, actually scheduled for November 27 starting at 6PM local time, will include a 16GB non-Retina first-gen Wi-Fi iPad mini for $199 ($50 less than Apple's price), bundled with a $30 gift card. Customers also be able to buy a set of Beats Wireless headphones for $149, $130 below normal retail price.
New iPad Air 2 sees $100 discount, Macs get up to $200 off
The "doorbuster" deals for Best Buy's Black Friday event have been published, and reveal that the chain will offer discounts on various Apple products, among other items. Of particular interest is a $100 discount on all models of the new iPad Air 2, reducing the entry-level model's price to just $400 but also applying to all other capacities, including the Wi-Fi + Cellular models. Macs, iPods, iTunes gift cards and even Beats headphones will also see discounts.
First-gen iPad mini, iPhone 5c also see surges
iPad Air activations grew some 51 percent over the previous weekend during the course of Black Friday and the rest of the Thanksgiving weekend, according to new Localytics data. The figure is based on the number of new devices that appeared in Localytics tracking for some 20,000 apps. The iPhone 5c and first-generation iPad mini also did well, each growing by 26 percent.
Apple tablets top-selling item at most major retailers
A survey done by retail analyst InfoScout based on over 100,000 Black Friday sales receipts from iOS and Android smartphone owners has revealed both expected and unexpected trends: the fact that Apple's latest iPad models were the runaway top seller among both tablets specifically and consumer electronics generally is not surprising -- but that 40 percent of iPad sales went to self-identified Android smartphone owners was less predictable. Even that, however, is not the most surprising finding.
Best online deals remain available from Amazon, MacMall, B&H
Online retailers still have MacBooks, iMacs, and iPads on sale, in spite of Black Friday being over and Cyber Monday having not yet started. We have collected some of the best deals still in stock.

Black Friday sales on tablets, laptops, desktops and more from OfficeMax
Officemax, a office supply retailer, currently has its own Black Friday sale promoting a variety of office-related products, but with a focus on technology. Tablets, laptops, desktops, monitors, printers, scanners, and portable file storage systems are included in the promotion.

Black Friday special edition part 1
The web has been abuzz today with loads of Black Friday deals, and DealNN has been on top of the coverage. A $300 discount on the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is featured at B&H (update: now sold out, but other B&H deals remain). Until December 1 the retailers has lowered the cost on a demo model from $2,550 down to $2,250. That makes this about $70 less than the lowest price offered anywhere else. This MBP features Retina display, 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of flash storage. A one-year warranty on parts and labor is included from Apple.
Pebble cuts price of smart watch from $150 to $130 for Black Friday
Pebble has reduced the cost of its smart watch by $20 on its website for Black Friday, bringing the price down from $150 to $130, and effectively counters most of the cost of a delivery upgrade to 3-5 days instead of weeks. The grey model of the Kickstarter-funded wristwear is backordered, though the jet black, cherry red, orange, and arctic white versions are still available.
Apple offers Apple Store gift cards for Black Friday deals
Apple's Black Friday deals are now live in the US with customers offered Apple Store gift cards instead of up-front discounts as Apple has offered customers in the past. This differs from the Black Friday deals in the UK, which continue to offer customers discounts on Apple products, although it is in line with the deals offered to Apple customers in Australia and New Zealand. Anyone buying an iPad Air today can expect a $75 Apple Store gift card, while buyers of the non-Retina iPad mini or iPad 2 will receive a $50 gift card. Gift cards are also being offered to buyers of MacBooks ($150), iMacs ($150), iPod touches ($50), iPod nanos ($25), the Apple TV ($25) as well as Apple peripherals and other accessories.
Apple offering discounts on premier products, third-party products too
Apple's Black Friday deals are now live in Europe with discounts on a number of Apple's premier products. Savings of up to £61 can be had on the iPad Air, while savings of up to £81 can be enjoyed on Apple's MacBook range including the Air, and Pro lines, while iMac buyers can also save £81 across the range. Historically, Apple has offered upfront discounts on its products during its Black Friday sales, although the Apple online stores in Australia and New Zealand are offering customers Apple Store gift cards instead.
50 percent sale off sale on variety of Native Instruments' items
Manufacturer of music production software and hardware Native Instruments has announced its major '50 percent off' sale in time for Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
The sale encompasses 68 Komplete Instruments and Effects, such as Action Strings, Massive, Kontakt 5, Reaktor 5 and more.
European Black Friday deals offer straight discounts, no gift cards
Black Friday sales have already begun in Australia, revealing Apple offers on the buying holiday. As expected, this year the company is offering rebate Apple Retail gift cards rather than discounting items directly, with the idea that customers will use the card to purchase accessories or apply it to other Apple purchases. Mac purchases earn a $150 gift card, iPad purchases receive a $75 card, and iPod buyers get a $50 card. However, the European Black Friday deals are quite different.
8 GB RAM, 1 TB Hard Drive iMac for $1100
Black Friday sales abound, and sales on Apple computers are no exception. Best Buy currently has the best deal on a 21.5-inch iMac with 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive for $1,100. Its original pricing was set at $1,300, meaning shoppers will save $200.
iPod touch available at lowest price from Target
Apple's fifth-generation iPod touch is available at a reduced price for Black Friday this year, with many online retailers competing for the lowest sale price. MacNN has found the best deal currently available is from Target, which sells the device at normal retail price but with a $50 gift card upon purchase, making the unit's net price $180 for the 16GB harddrive capacity, available in black or silver.
May be meant to spur accessory sales
Apple's planned Black Friday event will likely focus on gift cards, rather than actual discounts, sources say. A person buying an eligible product at an Apple Store is expected to get a gift card valid only at retail, and only after the date it was issued. Buying a Mac at a US store, for instance, might get shoppers a $100 card, while an iPad might come with a $50 card. Accessories and peripherals may come with $25 or $50 cards, depending on how much the product costs.

T-Mobile is planning to cut down payments for the iPhone 5s and 5c to zero on Black Friday, according to a leaked memo. Normally T-Mobile charges $149 for the 5s, and $49 for the 5c. The deal should officially run Friday through Sunday, although a "select number" of stores will reportedly begin discounts on Thursday evening. On Cyber Monday, T-Mobile will adjust down payments to $50 and $10, respectively, before scaling back up to full price.
ChronoSync backup and mirroring tool takes 25 percent off regular price
Well-regarded synchronization, backup and mirroring tool ChronoSync will be going on sale between November 28 and December 2 in what the developer, Econ Technologies, says is its "Thanksgiving-Black Friday-Small Business Saturday-Cyber-Monday" event. The program, which normally sells for $40 but includes free lifetime upgrades, will be discounted by 25 percent to $30 during the sale. Unlike Apple's own Time Machine solution, ChronoSync can be customized to backup only selected items, create bootable backups, and works across platforms, external drives, network drives and even iOS devices. A demo and the full program are available directly from the developer.

The promotion is also on a first-come-first-served basis, and not all locations are participating.
Promo image points at possible iPad, accessory discounts

Canadian stores typically opening later than in US
Only some Apple Stores in the US and Canada will be opening early on Black Friday, reports note. In the US a portion, generally ones inside malls, will be open at 6AM. Others will be open at their regular times, and/or between 7 and 9AM. Canadian outlets will be open no earlier than 7AM, but otherwise follow a similar pattern. Apple's retail website provides details for individual store hours.
Belkin offers Black Friday customers discounts on purchases from online store
Belkin, an electronics accessory manufacturer, has announced their upcoming promotional offers for Black Friday this year. Customers shopping online can receive deals such as $20 off every $100 spent, up to $500. Buyers at Belkin's online Factory Store will be able to receive an additional 15 percent off orders placed on Black Friday. On December 2 -- 'Cyber Monday' -- buyers will receive 30 percent off everything between 6AM and 10AM PT.
Company tries to seize extra holiday sales
An additional nine US Apple Stores will be open during the Thanksgiving holiday, a report indicates. Typically, only three locations stay active during Thanksgiving: Fifth Avenue in New York, Forum Shops in Las Vegas, and Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu. For 2013, though, worker schedules point to West 14th (New York), Lincoln Road (Miami Beach), San Francisco, Pioneer Place (Portland, Oregon), The Grove (Los Angeles), Third Street Promenade (Santa Monica), Fashion Valley (San Diego), and Ala Moana (Honolulu) keeping sales going.
Best Buy, Walmart to offer Apple product promotions
Black Friday, a major US shopping event, offers consumers major sale prices to kick off the Christmas holiday gift buying season. Best Buy is currently advertising up-front discounts, such as $200 off 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro, whereas Walmart is offering gift cards in varying amounts with the purchase of an iPhone, iPad mini and more. Black Friday begins the day after American Thanksgiving, on November 29 this year.
Online sales on Thanksgiving also increased

The amount of online retail activity for Friday, November 23rd has been called the "heaviest online spending day to date in 2012," with sales increasing 26 percent compared to Black Friday last year.

A one-year warranty on parts and labor is included from Apple.
New iMacs not in the cards for Black Friday, Cyber Monday
Apple's Black Friday shopping event is underway is Australia, and may give US buyers a strong indicator of the kind of discounts the company will offer North American buyers tomorrow. Apple has discounted the entire MacBook line -- including MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros in all configurations -- at $105 off the normal retail price. The current fourth-generation iPad is being sold for $41 off in all varieties, with the iPad 2 seeing a $31 discount. Native Instruments, ArtRage, Real Studio, Aquafadas
With the busiest shopping day of the year now only hours away, this would be a good time to take advantage of some great discounts on software that you won't find tomorrow in stores. For example, Native Instruments is offering 50 percent off Komplete instruments and effects, Maschine expansions and Traktor Pro DJ software from November 22-26. The company has also dropped the price on the iOS app iMaschine to only $1, which is 80 percent off the normal price.

Act fast though, because this offer is available today only. The third-generation iPads were replaced last month by the fourth-generation full-size iPad, which offers up to twice the performance in both processing and graphics over the third-gen's A5X chip.
