Barnes & Noble discounts Nook HD, HD+ in United Kingdom

Barnes & Noble has cut the price of its Nook tablets in the United Kingdom, in what appears to be a stock clearance. The Nook HD, with a seven-inch display, will cost 79 ($123) and 99 ($154) for the 8GB and 16GB models respectively, while the nine-inch Nook HD+ will go for 129 ($201) for the 16GB model and 149 ($232) for the 32GB version.

Barnes & Noble has dropped the price of its Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets as part of a Mother's Day promotion. For the next week, the retailer will be selling the 7-inch Nook HD from $149 for the 8GB and $179 for the 16GB models, while the 9-inch Nook HD+ is priced at $179 for 16GB of storage and $209 for 32GB. The discounts, varying between $50 and $90 depending on model, will apply until May 12th.

Barnes & Noble released today a report on its sales results for the nine-week holiday period ending December 29, 2012, revealing disappointing sales trends for its Nook tablet and e-reader devices. The retailer saw revenues of $1.2 billion for the period, down 10.9 percent over the prior year, due in large part to an 8.2 percent decline in store sales, as well as lower online sales and a number of store closures. The Nook segment, the centerpiece of Barnes & Noble's digital content sales strategy, saw a 12.6 percent drop in revenue compared to a year ago.

Book seller Barnes & Noble confessed that customers who have shopped recently in one of 63 stores in the US may have credit card information stolen. The company had discovered about September 14 that one PIN entry pad in each of its retail store had been broken into by hackers. The company defended its decision to not inform the public until now, saying that it had informed credit card companies that accounts had been compromised, and the US attorney's office from New York said that it could wait until December 24 to tell customers.
