Amazon Coins virtual currency now usable on all Android devices

Virtual currency appear in Amazon Appstore for non-Kindle tablets

Amazon is expanding the usefulness of its home-grown virtual currency, by allowing it to be used on all Android devices, not just the Kindle Fire tablet range, the retailer has revealed. Amazon Coins, introduced in May last year, can be used to buy apps from the Amazon Appstore to use on non-Amazon Android tablets and smartphones, as well as for any in-app purchases.

Apple outperforms Google, Amazon in app store ranking

Apple's App Store was rated the most mature overall, according to a new analysis from Pfeiffer Report. The App Store, which changed the mobile landscape upon its introduction, got higher overall scores than both Google's Play Store and Amazon's Appstore. The Play Store placed second behind Apple's offering, and Amazon's app repository came in last.

Blueprint for OS X free until November 10

Blueprint, a business organizational app, has launched -- offering users an integrative project organizer that can sync with Apple's native apps. Blueprint features the ability to manage projects and track their progress using milestones, and link items together to get a full overview of a contact or project. Task management, note creation, and calendars are included, and imported files and folders can be managed with a drag-and-drop function. Currently available for free from the App Store until November 10, full pricing will be $60. System requirements for Blueprint are OS X 10.7.3 or later, and at least 2GB of RAM.


Amazon opens pre-orders for Kindle Fire HD in 170 countries

Amazon Appstore operates in nearly 200 countries

Amazon will be putting its Kindle Fire tablets on sale in 170 more countries next month, and has also expanded its Appstore to operate in nearly 200 countries. Pre-orders for the 7-inch and 8.9-inch models of the Kindle Fire HD through, its UK site, France, and Amazon Germany have commenced, with shipments to customers due to start on June 13th.

Business Development director now directs Amazon Appstore

Microsoft's Senior Director of Windows Phone Business Development has left the software giant for online retailer Amazon. Windows Gadget News discovered yesterday that Williams' LinkedIn account lists his current position as Director of Amazon's Appstore. The move lends credence to persistent rumors that Amazon is working to develop its own smartphone for release later this year.


AT&T finally allows non-Market apps on Android phones

ATT allows non-Market apps on Infuse 4G onwards

AT&T with the launch of the Infuse 4G last night at least partly reversed a longstanding policy on Android phones that had drawn criticism from those hoping to switch away from the iPhone. Review units given out at the event had the option to load apps from "unknown sources" beyond Android Market that had previously been purposefully removed on all AT&T Android hardware. It wasn't evident whether this was specific to the Infuse 4G or a broad policy, but as one of AT&T's flagship phones would be more likely to represent the carrier's overall attitude.


Amazon Appstore offers in-browser Android emulator

As part of Amazon's new Android Appstore, the company has integrated a unique feature that allows customers to try out certain apps without leaving the browser. The 'test drive' system reportedly works with an Android emulator that resides on the retailer's EC2 cloud. Users can view a virtual handset and try out apps using the mouse or keyboard input.

The upcoming Amazon Appstore was tipped late Friday as coming on March 22. The launch would include both the Amazon website as well as a dedicated app. Wired in providing the details also confirmed an extra restriction on developers that would prevent them from linking to other apps through any other portal than Amazon's store.

Amazon briefly slipped its Appstore site ahead of schedule, revealing some of the content that will be available at launch, though the retailer quickly pulled the pages. Screenshots posted on show the store layout, along with popular titles such as Zenonia, Raging Thunder II, SetCPU, EasyTether, and PhotoVault, among others.
