The computer industry is moving broadly to a new standard for full-size optical drives, according to a discovery at Computex. The drives would still have the same width but would be half as thick, allowing either more drive bays or more free space inside. AnandTech's questioning on the Taipei show floor also revealed that the drives would also move to slot-loading drives and drop the long-term preference for tray-loaders.
Patent holder Intellectual Ventures has initiated lawsuits against a long list of tech companies that failed to establish licensing agreements. One of the suits targets security software makers Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro and Check Point. A second suit is aimed at memory manufacturers Elpida Memory and Hynix Semiconductor, while a third suit has been filed against component makers Altera, Lattice and Microsemi.
Normally known for its computer cases and power supplies, Antec has announced a new 2.1-channel speaker system which it says will deliver realistic 3D soundscapes for movies and games. The Soundscience's anodized aluminum satellite speakers accept either digital or analog input. An external toggle switches the speakers between stereo and Antec's proprietary 3D sound mode.
Antec has introduced its new Sonata Elite to its lineup of quiet PC cases aimed at those who like to put together PCs themselves. The Sonata Elite sports seven drive bays and seven expansion slots in a two-layer steel design with plastic side and top panels meant to eliminate unwanted noise. The use of silicone grommets is likewise employed to quell vibration and any associated noise, while two large, 120mm fans spin at slower speeds to develop the same amount of airflow as smaller blades would deliver at higher, louder speeds. Removable and washable filters make cleaning an easier task.
Antec recently introduced its Skeleton enclosure, seemingly aimed at gamers and those who are never happy to leave enough alone. The open design of the original enclosure, combined with the 3.6-inch front fan and a huge, top-mounted 9.8-inch three speed fan, effectively renders overheating a non-issue. The top-mounted fan also sports mutlicolor LEDs below it for a disco-ball like effect on dark ceilings. A standard ATX motherboard mounts on the upper level, while a slide-out, rack-like lower level has appointments for a power supply, a pair of optical drives and two hard drives.
Antec today served custom PC builders today with a new set of VERIS bundles that turn existing desktops into home theater PCs. The Multimedia Station line is headed by the Premier, which provides a full two-bay front panel with dials, input, and playback controls to navigate content without having to use a mouse or keyboard. It also supplies an add-on IR receiver and a matching remote as part of its $120 price.
