What's in your Tech Bag -- William Gallagher

11/02, 4:17pm

What's the gear you can't leave home without?

It's like looking at photos of people standing in front of bookshelves: you want them to get out of the way so you can see what books they have. Similarly, whenever there's a review anywhere of a bag, admit it: you're curious to see what people are carting around in them. There is a serious point: until you buy one, you can only get a sense of the size of a bag by seeing what they're capable of carrying. No, it's just nosiness, isn't it? With the sole aim of hoping to twist your arm into showing us what's in your kitbag, here's the contents of mine.

Living With: AmazonBasics Lightning Cable

How a cheap non-Apple cable stands up

It's not as if you go out of your way to pay Apple more money than you want to for things, but common wisdom holds that they do charge more -- how accurate that statement is, depends greatly on what product you're talking about. They charge enough more that if you have a Mac or an iPhone, you've been asked why you'd spend all that money, and you've been told that PCs and Androids are much better anyway, so there. The counter-argument you've probably started with is that no, they're not. When pressed, you've gone further and explained that you do spend more on Macs, but all the PC users you know have to keep replacing their hardware at what seems unfathomably short intervals. I've said all these things so often that I was programmed to ignore non-Apple Lightning cables.

Amazon outs own product brand, AmazonBasics

Amazon on Sunday announced the launch of its own brand of products, called AmazonBasics, which thus far includes AV cables and blank DVD media, but will expand soon with more basic consumer electronics with budget pricing. There is no word on what upcoming accessories AmazonBasics will offer, but the company is listening to customer feedback to help it make its decisions.
