Cook makes 'generous' donation to LGBT campaign Project One America

Apple CEO looks to influence Southern politics

Apple CEO Tim Cook has made a "generous personal financial investment" in Project One America, an LGBT rights effort run by the Human Rights Campaign, according to an announcement. Project One is concentrated on securing marriage and nondiscrimination rights for LGBT people in Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi. HRC says it's interested in "tearing down misperceptions, and providing concrete protections for those who need it most." The organization also lauds Cook for being the first openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 company, calling it a "clear and powerful message" about it being acceptable to be gay.

Publicity expected to help bill progress, Apple offers '100 percent' support

An effort by the only openly-gay legislator in Alabama to make progress on an anti-discrimination bill got a boost on Wednesday -- after some initial confusion -- when Apple endorsed the effort by Representative Patricia Todd (D-Birmingham) to name the bill after CEO Tim Cook, who has championed equality and civil rights issues and recently identified himself as gay. Cook is said to be "honored" by the naming, which might allow the bill to progress after years of being stalled on the state house floor.

Updated Apple page promotes taking advantage of US tax holidays

Apple has updated a promotional page to let shoppers know about tax holidays coming up in nine US states between August 1st and the 3rd. The states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Tennessee. During the holidays, Apple has said it will drop sales tax charges for qualifying purchases made online or at retail. Although taxes will still appear during online checkouts, proper totals should appear in email confirmations.

In new web and email promotions, Apple is pushing people to take advantage of upcoming US tax holidays via its online store. Ten states are holding holidays, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Of these, Florida is the lone addition in 2013.

Sprint adds 28 more markets to LTE coverage

Expansion mostly limited to minor towns

Sprint has expanded its LTE 4G coverage to 28 more towns in the US, according an announcement. The new locations are spread out across Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Missouri, Mississippi, Minnesota, Washington, Pennsylvania, Florida, Arizona, Michigan, Louisiana, Texas, and Massachusetts. Most of them are relatively minor; some notable names include Branson, Missouri, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Apple gear bought using stolen credit info

The US government has indicted 27 people suspected of belonging to a fraud ring targeting Apple Stores, reports say. The group is accused of making fake credit cards using stolen data bought from the Internet, and in turn fraudulently buying $1 million or more in goods from Apple Stores in 13 states. Products like Macs and gift cards were fenced to bring in cash.

Alabama lawsuit accuses Apple, AT&T of MMS confusion

Apple is facing yet another lawsuit over delayed MMS support on American iPhones, court documents show. Although the feature was eventually enabled on September 25th, the case's plaintiff -- Alabama resident Clyde Franklin -- charges both Apple and AT&T of misleading the public on MMS availability, with promises that it would become an option on the iPhone 3G and 3GS with the arrival of the v3.0 firmware. It did not, and Franklin notes that only a small disclaimer on the Apple website made mention that AT&T support would only come in "late summer."

Apple is planning to open its second Alabama retail store this Saturday, May 31st, according to announcement. Despite its name, the Bridge Street location is actually situated at 6782 Old Madison Pike in Huntsville, near Governors Drive; also unusual is that while the store is only days away from opening, it does not yet have an official website, essential for information such as store hours and upcoming events.
