Apps rebranded under Creative Cloud brand
Adobe is focused on its Creative Cloud service this week at its Max conference, where the company has introduced updates to its broad range of software. The new offerings include video-focused utilities Premiere Pro CC, After Effects CC, Prelude CC, SpeedGrade CC and Adobe Story Plus, along with the audio-production app Audition CC. Many of the new apps will enable users to sync settings between computers and remotely collaborate on videos without downloading the source materials.

Company continues subscription push

FxFactory adds new subtitle plug-in
Noise Industries has added a new plug-in to FxFactorty that can be used to add permanent subtitles to Final Cut Pro, Motion, Premier Pro, and After Effects projects. The new plug-in, dubbed SUGARfx Subtitles, includes support for a variety of fonts, and is capable of handling hundreds of languages, as well as importing several subtitle formats. A free trial of the plug-in can be downloaded online, while a full license costs $49.

IK Multimedia offers AmpliTube discounts
Noise Industries has released a new package of plugins that allows users to create video scrapbooks by animating still images and adding transitions and backgrounds. Nattress Video Scrapbook includes six dynamic transitions, as well as a variety of motion effects, and support for Final Cut Pro, Motion, and After Effects. The software also includes support for creating stylized backgrounds for portrait images that don't fill an entire frame. PluralEyes marries separate sound to vision
Two different pro-video editing software companies have released new plug-in versions for Final Cut Pro X and other editors that bring new abilities to their respective platforms. Singular Software has updated its PluralEyes clip-syncing program for FCP X, while FxFactory plug-in developer Nattress has added Levels and Curves, a filter pack that lets users color-grade in the film log, to FCP X and earlier versions, along with Motion and Adobe After Effects.

Yanobox, a development house that produces plugs-in for FxFactory, has debuted a new "next-generation" color grading and correction module called Moods that works with Final Cut Pro X, Motion (versions 3, 4 and 5) and Adobe's After Effects (CS3 through CS5.5). The plug-in, which can be purchased separately, features a "heads-up display" that overlays on the video, allowing for full-screen color work with HD or SD footage.

Seven all-new plug-ins also debuting
Pro video effects tool makers Noise Industries have announced that FxFactory 3, the latest version of the plug-in suite designed to work with Apple's Final Cut, Motion, Final Cut Express and Adobe's After Effects, will be a free upgrade for existing users. In addition, the Pro version adds a new "playback ready" transition along with improved existing effects, and users of EasyLooks and SugarFX light pack will receive free upgrades to maintain compatibility.

Paint Mask, brush slider get tweaks
Tiffen has released v3.0.5 of Dfx, its effects suite for photo and video editing. The upgrade critically adds support for Avid's new 64-bit editing tools, including Media Composer 6, Symphony 6 and NewsCutter 10. Also newly supported is a host of Sony cameras. The list includes DSLRs like the A550, A580, A700, A850, and A900, but also the NEX-3, NEX-5/5N, NEX-C3, and several SLT-series cameras: the A33, A35, A55V, A65V, and A77V. Remaining cameras on the list are the XCD-SX910CR and the STV680 VGA.

New monthly subscription and tablet features
Adobe has announced Creative Suite 5.5, an update to its major creative applications including InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Premiere Pro, and After Effects along with a new SDK for Photoshop CS5. The company -- which now offers new monthly subscription-based pricing options for each of the major suite bundles -- says the new version brings advances to HTML5, Flash authoring, digital publishing and video tools as well as new capabilities to help integrate tablet-oriented designs into creative workflows. Also present is a final version of Audition for the Mac; the SDK is the Photoshop Touch Software Development Kit (SDK).

Plug-in adds test instruments to After Effects
Video plug-in maker Synthetic Aperture has updated their test-instrument plug-in for Adobe's After Effects CS5, Test Gear, to v2.5, adding 64-bit support for CS5 while maintaining 32-bit support for the CS3 and CS4 editions -- a move that significantly reduces the possibility of out-of-memory errors when rendering effects.

Noise Industries has announced LensPack, a new collection of five video editing plug-ins developed by SUGARfx. The new tools are designed to extend the visual effects capabilities of powerful photo and video editing programs such as Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Apple Motion, and Final Cut Express. Eight new effects add transitions, color control
Noise Industries has launched FxFactory Pro 2.5, an update of the effects plugin collection. The software contains over 160 filters, generators and transitions. It can render effects up to 10-bit YUV quality, and supports hardware acceleration for previews and rendering. Editors can use stock or custom presets, or create their own project-specific plugins for Final Cut and After Effects, which can then be saved and shared. The collection as a whole is compatible with Final Cut Pro, Motion, Final Cut Express and After Effects.

Aquafadas has released a new version of PulpFx Abstract, a collection of generators for animated slideshows in Final Cut Pro, Motion, Final Cut Express and After Effects. Plugin supports several editing suites
Red Giant has released Magic Bullet Colorista II, an updated plugin for After Effects, Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. The software lets editors perform color correction on video using color wheels. New in the upgrade are several features, most importantly a new keyer, which can control individual colors or ranges. Some options include direct sampling, and softening, choking or inverting a matte.

Increases bit-depth, deinterlaces frames
Noise Industries and PHYX have launched a new video repair plugin, PHYX Cleaner. The software can be used to rebuild pixelated chroma channels, restore gradients, and increase effective color depth; it can also be used to convert interlaced fields into progressive comb-free frames, smooth skin blemishes, and remove high- and low-frequency visual noise. Rough 3D 8-bit images can be converted to higher bit depths.

Places focus on 64-bit code, Flash
As promised earlier this month, Adobe has begun shipping Creative Suite 5, a major revision of the company's flagship software. Of special emphasis is the shift to 64-bit code; After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere Pro have made the transition. Also present are new versions of Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash and various supporting apps, all with major feature additions. Flash is the second highlight of the suite, gaining tools for cross-platform development.

Brings up to 2,800 emitters to AE
Wondertouch has launched a new effects plugin, particleIllusion for After Effects. The software lets users employ particleIllusion content within After Effects, instead of switching to a standalone application. Up to 2,800 emitters can be used, which are said to provide quick setups for effects like smoke, fire, explosions and more abstract visuals. The full emitter collection can only be obtained by buying into the 12 Pro Emitters libraries.

Adobe has formally unveiled Creative Suite 5, the next generation of its flagship software collection. The new suite makes several major changes, perhaps most notably upgrading Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro to 64-bit code on Mac and Windows systems, improving speed on modern multi-core processors. Premiere Pro further supports acceleration from NVIDIA-based video cards, making it practical to edit in real-time or play back projects without rendering first.

Company will add 64-bit support to 3 other plugins
Three new visual effects plug-ins have been announced by Digieffects, with a formal launch scheduled for the National Association of Broadcasters' NAB Show next week. FreeForm 3D Mesh Warp, FreeForm 3D Displacer, and Damage 2.0 will all support 64-bit operation in various applications. FreeForm 3D Mesh Warp adds a 3rd dimension to After Effects' built-in mesh warp. Users can choose to divide the image into rows and columns before manipulating control tangents or creating cylinders, curves, ribbons, folding cards, and any other 3D shapes. It will retail for $100.

Plugin supports Final Cut, After Effects
Noise Industries and SUGARfx have launched Video Wall 2.0, an updated plugin for After Effects, Final Cut and Motion. The code generates wall-style effects for video productions, superimposing clips and still images on top of animations. The v2.0 release supports multiple video clips, and incorporates auto-animation functions, in some cases eliminating the need to keyframe movements.

Simulates fog and haze atmospheric conditions
Digieffects has launched Atmosphere, a new After Effects plug-in for simulating atmospheric conditions. The plug-in is capable of generating haze and fog effects within videos, while several configuration options allow users to adjust the effects depending on lighting and distance to the camera. Layers that are further away from the camera show a heavier haze/fog effect than the layers that are closer to the camera. This effect is also applied to parts of layers, resulting in greater immersion depending on which areas of the layer are closer to the camera.

Smoothing amount, skin detail, radius adjustable
Digital Anarchy has introduced a retouching tool, Beauty Box 1.0, for After Effects and Final Cut Pro. The utility focuses on blemish removal and smoothing skin, with a filter that is claimed to reduce the need for masking. Facial recognition technology is allows the app to recognize skin areas. Boris has released a new Adobe After Effects plug-in, Boris XML Transfer. The utility transfers Apple's Final Cut Pro program sequences to After Effects, preserving all aspects of Final Cut projects such as effects, audio, media clips, transitions, geometric transformations, and multi-clip edits. CoreMelt has launched an update to its plug-ins for programs such as Final Cut Studio and After Effects. CoreMelt 2.23 offers five additional plug-ins, for instance allowing "fluid and flowing" graphic elements, shaded backgrounds, and the simpler creation of smooth glass, rough glass or water reflections. Matrox MXO2 LE
Matrox this evening launched a new portable breakout box aimed specifically at Mac users editing at a pro level with Final Cut Studio. The MXO2 LE takes SDI, component, RCA and 10-bit HDMI video input from cameras or other sources and puts them in formats immediately usable by Color, Final Cut Pro and other apps in the suite, such as Apple's in-house ProRes 4:2:2 HQ format. It can also work with non-Apple software like After Effects and uses an XLR power input, making it friendly to a MacBook Pro at a video shoot where XLR may be more common than AC outlets.

Dashwood has produced a new video effects plug-in, Stereo3D Toolbox, based on Noise Industries' FxFactory platform. The software converts footage from After Effects, Motion or Final Cut into stereoscopic 3D. Boris FX has released Continuum Motion Tracker, which includes four specialized filters for gathering and utilizing motion data from video. The Corner Pin filter allows users to map media to a specific area on a moving object. FxTiles for Final Cut 7
Boinx Software and Noise Industries have announced the FxTiles software collection of 3D filters and transitions are now available for Apple’s Final Cut 7. The series of plug-ins are designed for both video and post-production users, and are based on FxFactory visual effects architecture. Some of the 3D filters and transitions include a Flip filter which divides the source image into tiles and then flips them into 3D space, and a Flip & Reveal transition which divides source images into tiles and flips them in 3D space, delivering the same portions of the destination image.

3D Serpentine plug-in
Zaxwerks has released 3D Serpentine, a new plug-in for Adobe After Effects that enables the creation of 3D path-extrusions, also know as animated noodles. The software works by using 3D paths to control the position, size and orientation of 3D graphics, and enables the creation of 3D effects such as shooting starts and film reels. Red Giant has released Trapcode Particular 2, an Adobe After Effects plug-in used to generate 3D particles such as sparks and burning embers. Sapphire plug-in rentals
GenArts has announced a monthly rental option for its flagship plugin effects, Sapphire. The plugins can be rented for $170 per month; far less than the $1699 purchase cost of the plug-in for After Effects or Final Cut Pro. This option is designed to allow artists who work on a project basis to avoid purchasing the costly full license of the Adobe After Effects plug-in or an Apple Final Cut Pro FxPlug. Adobe has posted an update to After Effects CS4, the most recent version of its video effects software. The patch, v9.0.1, makes upgrades to Mocha, enabling it to properly read QuickTime files. Also improved are Dynamic Link workflows, though Adobe has not specified the differences in the new code.

Cycore effects packages
Cycore has released two effects packages for Adobe After Effects, CFX Path Tools and CFX Sphere Utilities. CFX Path Tools contains two plug-ins that utilize After Effects mask path functions. "Wiggle Stroke" allows for basic frame wiggling or even geometric wire animations. Three basic modifiers are used to displace the stroke, including basic noise, wave noise, and wave functions. "Rakka" can handle multiple repetitions of a layer, allowing it to be animated along a mask path. Controls are provided for the flow design and characteristics.

Simulate: Camera for CS4
Digieffects has published a new plug-in collection, Simulate: Camera, intended for the video software in Adobe's Creative Suite 4. The plug-ins are intended to simulate various camera and film errors, which can add interest to footage that is otherwise too sanitized. Archive is used to reproduce various decay and contamination effects, while Overexpose is able to ramp up highlights and generate flickering.
