A challenge to the sweeping "net neutrality" rules issued by the FCC in 2015 has been rejected by the Washington, DC US Circuit Court of Appeals. The court, which had previously rejected some of the FCC's earlier net neutrality proposals in a 2-1 ruling that forces AT&T and a national ISP industry group, which brought the challenge, to obey federal regulations that prevent the extortionate practice of blocking or slowing some internet traffic and prioritizing those that agree to pay the providers a fee.
Carrier AT&T has filed two notices with the Federal Communications Commission that argue against the planned introduction of a proposal by FCC Chair Tom Wheeler to reclassify broadband and mobile data providers as "common carriers" under Title II. The proposal, yet to be formally introduced, would get rid of paid-prioritization deals, ensure net neutrality, cease blocking and throttling users without cause, and require more transparency in dealings by ISPs.
Sprint is stepping up its efforts to pull customers away from other carriers after its double data promotion ended, by offering to halve their bills instead. The aggressive promotion offers to provide customers on AT&T and Verizon a subscription at half the cost of its competitors, while still providing unlimited voice minutes, unlimited texts, and an equivalent amount of data to their old plan.
Until the end of the year, AT&T is offering a $50 bill credit when current subscribers upgrade to a new iPhone under Next program. Buyers who get a new iPhone from either the online or retail Apple Stores under AT&T's Next installment payment plan (and keep the line active for at least 45 days after doing so) will see a $50 bill credit"within three billing cycles," according to the terms of the deal. The carrier is reserving the right to end the promotion prematurely, though its expected to stay in place through 2014.
AT&T has advised it will be selling the LG G Watch R when it goes on sale in the United States. Though the brief announcement does confirm the carrier will host the Android Wear smartwatch, complete with a round P-OLED display, AT&T states it will be announcing pricing and availability at a later date. LG recently revealed the watch will launch in Europe at the start of November, with "key markets" including North America gaining the watch shortly after.
One of the US' largest carriers, AT&T, has abruptly ended a promotion it began with Beats Music prior to the latter being acquired by Apple. The carrier was previously offering the ability to include a Beats Music subscription on a customer's wireless bill if desired, and told AppleInsider that it will continue to offer the plan to existing customers and those currently on the free trial. There is, however, no longer any access to a free trial through AT&T's website.
AT&T has admitted that it has suffered a data breach, and is warning customers about the intrusion. The communications provider has written to the Vermont attorney general about the breach, which took place in August, though unlike similar breaches at Home Depot, Target, and itself, this was instigated by an employee rather than an outside force.
Traditionally, iPhones bought from Apple Stores come in two varieties: locked to an individual carrier with a two-year contract, or completely unlocked but at full retail price. Last month, the company began allowing sales of iPhones on pre-paid plans, and now appears to be poised to allow Apple Store sales of iPhones to existing (and eligible) AT&T Next, Verizon Edge, T-Mobile Jump, and possibly Sprint EasyPay customers, who have the freedom to upgrade their phones more often in exchange for a slightly higher monthly charge.
Verizon Wireless has announced its fourth-quarter earnings, which have been bolstered by 1.7 million new subscribers. The company also reports significant progress in its LTE deployment, spreading 4G service across 99 percent of its existing 3G footprint and reaching approximately 97 percent of the US population.
AT&T has launched a new promotion that promises up to $450 per line for existing T-Mobile customers. Subscribers willing to jump ship are automatically qualified for $200 credit when they transfer their service to AT&T, along with a trade-in credit of up to $250 for eligible smartphones, however participants are forced to forgo subsidized pricing for new devices.
