Review: U-Cover Keyboard Protector

Protect your keyboard from wayward crumbs and dust. (March 9th, 2007)

MacNN Rating:

Product Manufacturer: Uniea Corp.

Price: $19.99 US

The Good

  • Protects your keyboard from dirt. Softens the keyboard sound. Washable and removable. Two models fit MacBook and MB Pro.

The Bad

  • Enter key is not designed correctly, affects fit.

Sometimes the simplest solutions to problems are the best. We spend more time in front of the computer than ever before and possibly more time than in front of the television. This means we are most likely eating while surfing the net.

Keep Your Keyboard Clean

A solution to keep those pesky crumbs from your MacBook or MacBook Pro keyboard is the Uniea U-cover. This Uniea keyboard cover is made of a silicone material much like hundreds of iPod cases on the market today. The U-Cover is molded and shaped to fit the keys on your portable Mac.

Pleasing Colors

Available in pink, blue or transparent, the Uniea U-Cover keyboard protector protects against crumbs, dirt and general wear and tear on your keyboard. No more do you have to get in between the key cracks to remove those biscuit crumbs or dust that often finds its way underneath the keys. The transparency of the cover is enough so that the backlight on your keyboard continues to shine through quite easily.

Cushion and Clean

The cover also serves a second purpose. When I put on this cover and started typing, the keys felt a lot softer and quieter. It made typing on the keyboard more pleasant in a way as each key was cushioned.

The 0.5mm thick silicone cover is removable and washable. After a couple of weeks of use, I could see that the dirt build up was getting a bit icky, so I just removed it and rinsed it under the sink. There are no adhesive or any sticky substances involved in attaching this keyboard cover to your Mac, so it is removable and transferable.

Not Perfectly Molded

The one complaint I have with this keyboard protector is the Enter key mold. It is not designed correctly for the MacBook Pro. This minor criticism doesn't detract from the U-Cover or make it unusable, so I plan to leave the Uniea keyboard protector in place. I have a MacBook Pro and I do find myself eating while using it, especially when I'm out of the house.

The $20 asking price is reasonable considering the value that this brings to you, especially if you enjoy eating food while using your Mac.
