Summer weather in New England is never predictable, so whenever I go out to photograph wildlife or soccer games I travel with a raincoat, sweatshirt, and a change of shoes. Most sweatshirts have two pockets, which means if I want to use my iPod I have to strap it on my belt or arm, or pocket it. It is not easy juggling a water bottle, iPod, camera, and monopod. Thankfully, ScotteVest has the perfect solution, the Ultimate Hoodie.
Technology Enabled ClothingUnder most circumstances, I would not recommend spending $70 on a sweatshirt, but this is no normal sweatshirt. This addition to Scottevest's Technology Enabled Clothing line includes their patented Personal Area Network (PAN). This network allows you to thread your MP3 or iPod earphones thru holes in the pocket or secure it with Velcro around your neck.
Lightweight microfleeceThe new Ultimate Hoodie Microfleece is much lighter weight than the previous heavy gray cotton Ultimate Hoodie introduced last year. While I love that sweatshirt, it is very bulky, and very warm. The microfleece version is about half the weight, but packs quite a punch for carrying almost everything you need. It is perfect for 45 to 55? weather or pair it with another jacket for winter warmth.
This 2.0 hoodie includes eleven pockets and sports a new elasticized iPod pouch on the left sleeve. Although the pouch doesn't look very big, it fits the old 40GB iPod Photo and a fifth generation 80GB iPod while in a slim case. In addition to the neck loops, padded Velcro closures hold your earbuds in place. If you prefer to run your cords up the front and not around your neck, there are also four cord holders that run along side the zipper.
Pockets GaloreThe black SeV Ultimate Hoodie Microfleece includes pockets designed for everything from music players, to change, and sunglasses. The front pockets seal magnetically, which concerned me, but ScotteVest has moved the magnets up and no problems have been reported. The no-bulge pocket doesn't even show a water bottle secured inside with a built-in wide elastic band. Pockets also offer a spiral key holder and an inner second nylon pocket for smaller items, such as a card memory case for your camera. A zippered inside, divided nylon chest pocket also has an iPod earbud outlet. The fleece material is thin enough to control your iPod through the fabric.
Made with careIf all the design elements don't sway you, a close look at the build quality of this clothing may. No cheesy zippers here, but a strong metal 2-way front zipper, plus binding stitches throughout with no frayed or shoddy edges. The ribbed bottom is lightly elasticized, as are the sleeves. The hood includes a thick cord to tie it closed.
I received the Medium for review and it is large for a size 10-12 woman, but I prefer a loose fit. It is available in six sizes, so one should even fit a very large man. I can hang my iPod on my arm, put a camera in one pocket with its associated batteries and card, a water bottle in the other pocket, and still have room for other personal items.
