The Good

  • Easy to follow guides, great writing.

The Bad

  • None

As digital cameras and photo printers improve, more and more people forgo that trip to a photo lab and use their own equipment to print photographs of their favorite moments to share. Not all pictures come out perfect and the former job of the photo lab to correct imperfect pictures has to be done at home now. Adobe Photoshop Elements is a stripped down version of Adobe Photoshop that caters specifically to photo enthusiasts who want to touch up their digital pictures. Introduced last fall, Photoshop Elements 3 has a load of new features, which makes the learning curve a lot steeper.

Step by Step

Most users need a little help to get the most out of Photoshop Elements and their digital camera, so the renowned publisher Sybex stepped in to help. Sybex offers 368 pages filled with tutorials for both beginners and prosumers in their book, Photoshop Elements 3 Solutions by photographer, Mikkel Aaland. Divided into twelve chapters, the book offers systematic solutions beginning with the most common, such as how to enhance and touch up photographs, to turning your photographs into real pieces of art. Each step by step illustrated topic contains multiple images so that you never loose track or get confused as to where you are in the editing process. A bundled CD includes all the images that are used in the book, so it is truly an interactive learning experience, rather then a dry read.

Efficient Learning

After turning over the last page of the book you will be able to efficiently import, enhance, create composites and panoramas, work with text, output to print and web and much more. A nice feature guides people to the right tool or menu by providing both the keyboard shortcut and the appropriate icon from the toolbox. More seasoned Photoshop users know that lots of time can be won by using those keyboard shortcuts. Highlighted text also points out why one tool is more useful than another for specific types of editing. The inclusion of many other time saving tips in this book helps you get better results, faster and easier.

It's a Recommended Buy

Sybex hits the right focus with Photoshop Elements 3 Solutions. The content is great and so is the writing style. It is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to improve their digital pictures and their Photoshop Elements skills. At only $40, the book is also a great deal. Sybex offers a sample chapter on their web site (on editing a whole photograph), so make sure to check that out too.
