Product Manufacturer: Macessity

Price: $19.99 US

The Good

  • Inexpensive. Protects against food/drink spills. Soft to the touch. Quiets the keyboard. Washable.

The Bad

  • Dust, hair, and fuzz magnet. For MacBook keyboards only. One color.

I live the hazardous college lifestyle, so I always keep an eye open for helpful protective gear for my electronics. The Macessity Keyboard Shield, available in two sizes, one for the MacBook Pro and one for the MacBook, looks like a good candidate. Both products are clear with a frosted look.

Sticks but not sticky

The Keyboard Shield is made out of a thin pliable silicone with a shiny underside that adheres to the keyboard without the use of glue or sticky substances. You apply it simply by laying it flat and spreading it evenly across the keys. The shield fits the keyboard well and recedes in between each key, plus provides a clear view of each letter through the transparent cover. The surface of the shield is a rubbery texture, which feels soft to the touch and provides a slight grip while typing. Macessity put their label unobtrusively in the top right corner just above the Eject button.

Unobtrusive but attracts dust

The shield is barely visible when applied. A side benefit is that the Keyboard Shield quiets the keys when typing, which may come in handy in public places. While its rubbery texture feels good when typing, it also acts as a dust and fuzz magnet, which is my only complaint. This may present an issue for anyone who is allergy-prone. In my two weeks of testing the product full-time, I have not seen the corners curl up or the adhesive qualities wear off. I move my laptop from various cases and tote it around daily, and the shield has not budged.

Washable

I washed the Keyboard Shield under lukewarm water with a mild soap, as Macessity suggests. After drying it off, it was ready to go back on and stay put just as well as the first application.

A Good Investment

My kitchen table doubles as a laptop and work desk, so the Keyboard Shield serves as a necessary protective accessory for my MacBook Pro. I can honestly say I will continue to always use it. For the $19.99 price tag, the Keyboard Shield is an inexpensive investment, to protect your expensive laptop.

It not only helps prevent a potential deadly food or drink disaster, it protects against the gradual accumulation of grime and body oils that I have seen wear away keyboard lettering. Plus it prevents the keys from pressing against the screen when the MacBook is closed, formerly a big problem on older PowerBooks.
