Review: Logic3 JiveBox

A cube iPod sound system to knock your socks off. (February 21st, 2008)

MacNN Rating:

Product Manufacturer: Logic 3 International Ltd.,a division of SpectraVideo plc.

Price: 129.99

The Good

  • Exceptional sound quality. Well engineered sound system. Good design.

The Bad

  • Glossy black exterior is prone to showing up surface scratches and dust. Not available in the US, yet. Some may not appreciate the simple block design.

For the ultimate party sound system, look no further than the Logic3 JiveBox. This all-in-one cube houses a 2.1 speaker system that delivers a surprising amount of volume for such a compact system. The JiveBox comes complete with IR remote, 3.5mm line in cable, AC adapter, and an assortment of docking cradle plates to fit various iPod sizes new and old.

The System

The focal point of the JiveBox is the 7-inch glossy black block that encases all of the speakers and neatly hides the cables underneath the unit. A changeable glowing LED light strip that can be changed to red, blue, or green complements its simple design.

Logic3 takes a different approach to design in their sound systems and the JiveBox looks like no others. Even the included power block is quite different from the usual ugly brick adapters supplied with most electrical devices. The power block is finished in the same glossy black as the main unit. It even features a blue LED light in the corner and sits on a set of rubber feet

The Sound

The 2.1 speaker system is built with two Neodymium midrange 75mm drivers, 25mm tweeters, and a 130mm subwoofer, so there is plenty of power to output your tunes. The tweeters, located on the top corners, preserve the tonal balance. The subwoofer is connected to the massive radiator that takes up most of the underneath of the cube.

JiveBox Exposed

What is most impressive about the JiveBox is the amount of noise it can generate from such a small cube. It ranges from 70 to 110 watts of power depending on the song and the music demands. Crank up the volume and you get distortion-free music that delivers clear vocals, great for casual listening or when it's time to party. Bass levels are equally impressive and with the right tune and the bass on full, you can easily generate floor vibrations out of the JiveBox. It achieves booming sound without any distortion, which is a testament to the speaker engineering and technology that has gone in to making this iPod speaker dock.

I put the JiveBox through a series of sound tests using my own collection of music ranging in quality from 128kbps to 256kbps. The JiveBox handles both types of compression equally well and I couldn't tell the difference. What does come through very well is the plentiful supply of bass, however for those that aren't a fan of constant thumping noises you do have the option to turn it down.

Included Remote

Since the JiveBox unit is a simple design, and true to its cube form factor, there are fewer control buttons. The slim line remote control lets you move through albums, control the bass and treble, and changes the color of the light on the JiveBox as well as the intensity of the light through the dimmer button. The dimmer also has three control levels.

Minor Issues

Only one minor issue prevents the JiveBox from being a perfect system. As with all glossy black products, it shows dust, fingerprints, and surface scratches. Unfortunately, surface spots are unavoidable. Logic3 has created a speaker system that is designed well inside and out. This is a small system that packs a lot of punch. Another setback is that this system is only available through the UK site as of this writing. You can order it, but you'll have to purchase a converter to use it in the US.
