ivyskin Retro iPod touch Cases

August 13th, 2008
Two very different iPod touch cases by ivyskin.

There is only one item as ubiquitous as white apple ear buds and that is the protective cases encompassing the iPod that came with the ear buds. The number of case manufacturers seems to grow every day. Based in San Jose, Ca., ivyskin is a leading provider of innovative polysilicon accessories for Apple iPhone, iPod, and Macintosh products. The tested accessories of the day are the Retro and Retro T2 cases for the iPod touch. (Editor’s Note: The star rating above is the average of the two different ratings of the products below.)

The Retro

The well-designed 2mm thick Retro comes in five different colors: Black, white, pink, red, and blue. Regardless of the color you choose every case has a black back. I received a Razz red case to review, which is quite the eye catcher. Since the case doesn’t cover the screen, all Retros come with a welcome screen protector in the box.

Royal Blue Retro Skin

Like many ivyskin products, the Retro is made of a product called LEXoN. This polysilicon material is quite durable and very flexible. The Retro fits the iPod touch well and it doesn’t make the iPod too bulky. I prefer the soft feel of the LEXoN to a harder plastic case because it is comfortable to hold in my hand. I can’t find any faults with this reasonably priced case ($24.99) and I think that it is quite durable, therefore it earns a 5-star rating.

The Retro T2

Ivyskin’s Retro T2 is one of the hard case products, available for the iPod touch or the original iPhone. This “touch through” case has a layer of plastic over the screen that according to ivyskin, is “coated with a special patent pending material that conducts a continuous electrical current across the shield.” Consequently, your touch controls your iPod or iPhone without any problem, even with gloves. They highlight that it is German designed material, which may indicate it has the engineering quality of a BMW or Mercedes, or that the entire case is just like the SeeJacket from German manufacturer ARTWIZZ, reviewed previously. I believe that latter is a more accurate statement. Of course, in an innovative effort, ivyskin calls the scratch-resistant T2 technology, Surface Xylo Wave (SXW).

Royal Blue Retro Case

The Retro T2 functions better than the SeeJacket in terms of screen response. Perhaps the SXW technology is a big improvement over the SeeJacket’s plastic screen cover, but overall, the designs are the same. It seems odd to me that the US produced T2 ($34.99) retails for $5 more in the states than the German produced SeeJacket. Further, I have my gripes with overall case design, because the hard to use headphone jack is recessed in too far and the case feels like cheap plastic. I’m rating the Retro T2 3.5 Stars because while the improved touch screen response is well worth the five extra dollars; the headphone jack and case quality issues are still big concerns.
