Adobe has released v3.5 of its two main Flash server products, Flash Media Interactive Server and Flash Media Streaming Server. The pair function as a backbone for supplying Flash content to a wide audience; Interactive Server concentrates on tasks such as gaming and VoIP/webcam chat, while Streaming Server is intended simply for broadcasting live or pre-recorded Flash video. Both titles have been improved with dynamic streaming, which encodes video in variable bit rates to ensure smoother playback. The two have also been given integrated HTTP servers, and support for streaming media with restrictions from Flash Media Rights Management Server. XMP metadata created in Production Premium CS4 can be delivered as well.
Interactive Server alone has been upgraded with a live DVR function, which lets viewers pause and seek through normally live video streams. Improvements to the plug-in infrastructure are said to enable better integration and server management. Interactive Server 3.5 costs $4,500 new, or $349 as an upgrade from v3.0. Streaming Server 3.5 is a $249 upgrade, or $995 new.
