Apple is the process of developing a new Internet search technology, anonymous sources claim. It is uncertain what exactly this may imply, but it is believed that Apple may be unhappy with the way search is currently handled in Safari, whether for the desktop or iPod and iPhone versions. The browser currently defaults to a standard Google search, but Google CEO Eric Schmidt excuses himself from Apple board meetings involving mobiles, and is rumored to be considering leaving the board of directors permanently.

Apple and Google may also be coming to loggerheads over the latter's Android platform, which recently saw its first deployment through the T-Mobile G1. Android phones are frequently considered the main threat to the iPhone, and so Apple may be interested in distancing itself from Google.

It has been speculated that Apple could set up a rival search service, but this is thought to be unlikely due to the money it makes from directing advertising targets to Google, and the expense involved in setting up a serious search contender. The company has also veered away from hiring anyone with search expertise, which would be essential.

Added speculation argues that Apple may be interested in providing a more visual form of search, which could be backed by a recent patent application depicting a graphic history tree with similarities to Time Machine. In theory, this could be applied to search results as well as past visits.
