The US presidential campaign for Barack Obama has taken the unusual step of publishing its own iPhone application. The Obama for America app sorts and prioritizes a user's phone contacts, organizing them according to which states the campaign sees as "battlegrounds" for the election; people from Colorado and Michigan, for example, are listed higher than those from Texas or California. The number of calls made through the app is reported back, but the campaign claims not to receive any personal information.Other features of the app include Get Involved, which uses GPS to locate the nearest campaign office, and Local Events, which similarly displays upcoming pushes. A Media component links to photos and videos, though some YouTube clips are said to be producing errors. Finally, people can choose to access more general information through News and Issues menus, and check a ticker that counts down to the November 4th elections. The app is a free download.
