Apple TV v2.1: security pat...

Apple says the v2.1 update for Apple TV addresses six security issues. Several of the fixes involve code that can be executed from "maliciously crafted" movie files, resulting in "unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. The security update also addresses breaches from malware-infected QuickTime content, and PICT images. Additional details have been posted on Apple's website.

As expected, update released Thursday also includes support for MobileMe galleries. MacNN installed the update on an early version of the Apple TV Hardware, and the download took about two minutes over an 802.11n Airport Extreme network attached to cable broadband. The update allows users to log-in to their MobileMe accounts using the on-screen keyboard.

Our attempts to log-in to MobileMe were not successful, possibly due to the Apple's transition from .Mac to MobileMe. The update -- which is downloaded directly to the Apple TV -- also contains support for Apple's free Remote application which allows users to control their device with an iPhone. Remote is available now at the iTunesAppStore, but requires an iPhone 3G or a first generation iPhone or iPod Touch updated to version 2.0. There rest of the Apple TV interface appears to have few, if any changes.
