Apple posts iPhone upgrade ...

Apple has posted a new support article for people upgrading from first-generation iPhones to the 3G, enabling them to carry over unique content from the original device such as notes, photos, e-mail accounts and SMS messages. The upgrade guide notes that in the US, people must use the new SIM card shipped with each 3G; in other countries, the card from the old phone will function in the new one. In either case, iTunes 7.7 or later is required.

Users are first expected to sync their 2.5G iPhone with iTunes, and run a backup of the phone's contents. The 3G device is then connected, at which point iTunes asks if users want to restore from backup or configure a new device. Finally, the 3G should restart, at which point the normal sync process should be run. Apple warns that if files and settings are missing on the 3G, the backup has likely failed, and the 3G must have its firmware restored so the upgrade can begin again.
