NewerTech announces first "green" RAID

Newertech on Thursday unveiled its first “green” storage device promising significant energy savings. The Guardian MAXimus eMax is a triple-interface 5400rpm 1TB external drive with a 64MB buffer. NewerTech claims the "plug & play" device uses 15-50 percent less power than competing products while providing the speed and low-noise features sought by creative professionals looking for a back-up solution. The device also supports Time Machine.

The e-Max is the latest addition to the Maximus line of RAID-1 mirror drives which protect data by writing data on two hard disks at the same time. The eMax uses two 1TB 100MB/s drives, and is RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances) compliant. The Maximus line features two FireWire 800 ports, a single FireWire 400, and two USB 2.0 ports. The eMax is available now from OWC for $550.
