America Movil to carry iPhone in Mexico, more

America Movil today said it would carry the iPhone in Mexico as well as other countries in the region, bringing the device to the western Latin-speaking areas for the first time. The carrier doesn't provide a specific release date for the phone but confirms that the device will be available sometime later in the year. The company is considered one of the largest providers south of the US and serves 16 countries in the Caribbean and South America.

Specific nations aren't included but are said to involve America Movil's overall operations, which includes Brazil, Chile, and Colombia.

The announcement also omits any mention of an exclusive contract for the country, supporting news earlier this week which proved that Apple is inking non-exclusive deals that see two or more companies sell the iPhone in a given nation.

America Movil's announcement comes on the heels of iPhone announcements in the past week for Rogers and Vodafone that will bring the hybrid phone and media player to Canada as well as ten additional countries, significantly expanding the reach of the device beyond its current American and European territories. The lack of phone details and plans is widely expected to hinge on the unveiling of next-generation iPhones at next month's Worldwide Developer Conference.
