MozyHome offers unlimited internet backup

Mozy has released a final version of MozyHome for Mac 1.0, what it calls the "industry's first" unlimited online backup service for the Mac. The service, which boasts more than 700,000 users and 6.2 billion backed up files, allows users to transparently backup files over the internet -- up to 2GB of online backup absolutely free (and no expiration date) or $5 per month for unlimited online backup capacity. Mozy protects photos, music, videos and other files types from hard drive crash, accidental deletion, natural disaster or theft. Files are encrypted with 448-bit Blowfish encryption and transferred via a 128-bit SSL connection.

For maximum efficiency, after the initial backup, Mozy only backs up incremental changes to files and folders, meaning subsequent backups run extremely fast. In addition to the most recent backup, Mozy also keeps 30 days worth of file versions as well.

In the event of data loss, files may be recovered via the Mozy client software, downloaded from the Mozy website, or by ordering the files on a set of DVDs from Mozy.

MozyHome services, however, does limit the upload bandwidth and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher.

"Mozy is honoring its roots by augmenting its service to consumers and small businesses," said Vance Checketts, chief operating officer for Mozy. "We've had more than 43,000 individuals participate in our public beta and have devoted thousands of hours of development to this new MozyHome for Mac release."

Later this summer, Mozy said it will release a business version of its Mac service to enhance its MozyPro and MozyEnterprise offerings. Businesses interested in an online backup service for the Mac can signup to be notified online.
