O2 confirms Irish iPhone launch

Coming only a day after exploration of Apple's iPhone 1.1.4 firmware revealed references to unsupported carriers, O2 Ireland has confirmed that it will soon be releasing the iPhone for its network. The debut is in fact scheduled to coincide with the beginning of the company's fourth financial quarter, with an official launch set for March 14th. This also marks the beginning of the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

The Irish deployment will mirror that of the UK, where the iPhone is also carried by O2, and additionally sold by Carphone Warehouse. An 8GB model will be priced at €399, and the 16GB phone at €499. Fees will start at €45 per month under an 18-month contract; users will not however have access to unlimited data, the cap being set at 1GB for all plans. Similarly, Visual Voicemail is not being supported in the initial deployment, though it may arrive later. Both of these changes will make the Irish iPhone distinct from that in any other country.
