Apple confirms iPod touch video glitch

Some iPod touch players are in fact displaying overly dark video, Apple has confirmed in response to inquiries. Widespread reports, including complaints on Apple forums, have noted that blacks on photos and videos can appear to have a "negative" effect, resembling LCDs viewed at off angles, even though they are actually being viewed directly. Tech columnist Walter Mossberg, speaking with Apple, has learned that this is a known defect, but is only affecting a small cluster of players. Apple says it is attempting to solve the problem, though no timeframes for a resolution have been offered.

Other reports both by users and in some sections of the media have suggested that the problem is inherent to the Touch, a result of using inferior screens. The design and technology of the Touch is in many respects identical to that of the iPhone, which has generally been free of complaints about image quality.
