iPhone unlocked with free d...
After months of development, participants of the unofficial iPhone Dev Team have finally achieved their own software unlock of the iPhone (download mirror). Unlike efforts from groups such as iPhoneSIMfree and UniquePhones, however, the Dev Team version is being distributed for free, and has already begun to spread rapidly across the Internet. Sources claim that the unlock has been independently tested and verified as working.

Those responsible for the unlocking software, dubbed "iUnlock," may have exploited a buffering bug also used by the iPhoneSIMfree team. The pursuit of an iPhone unlock has been a goal ever since the device's June 29th release; aside from representing a technical challenge, many have expressed frustration with the two-year AT&T contract required with a normal iTunes activation. Unlocking phones for use with other carriers is also legal under an exemption of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, although specific steps in the process may be illegal. The legitimacy of the Dev Team software has not been scrutinized in this regard. MacNN bears no responsibility for any damage or legal issues caused by installing iUnlock.
