The pursuit of an iPhone unlock has been a goal ever since the device's June 29th release; aside from representing a technical challenge, many have expressed frustration with the two-year AT&T contract required with a normal iTunes activation. Unlocking phones for use with other carriers is also legal under an exemption of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, although specific steps in the process may be illegal.
